Virginia Cans Spam

Following the lead of California and Washington, Virginia lawmakers recently adopted legislation that would allow businesses and individuals who have received unsolicited e-mail originating in Virginia to seek damages against spammers in civil court. Virginia's bill also makes sending spam with false or misleading headers (subject lines) a criminal offense, with penalties ranging from fines to jail time. Dubbed "The Internet Capital of the World" by Virginia Governor James Gilmore, the state is home to many large ISPs, including AOL and UUNet.
