Mobile banking apps are great because they give you control over your money on the go. They allow you to quickly check your account balances, pay bills, transfer funds and deposit checks.

That’s all well and good, but they also do something even more important: protect your accounts from fraud. That is if you set up a certain simple, yet critical (and unfortunately often underutilized) feature within them.

We’re talking about the security alert feature now found in most mobile banking apps from most major banks. The majority of banking apps list this key option simply as “Alerts.” All you have to do is turn them on.

In-app security alerts can tip you off to when unusual account activity has taken place, when you have insufficient funds and when your personal account information has been tampered with. They can also inform you of specific activity within multiple accounts, including your personal and business savings, checking, credit card, mortgage and more.
