Startup Scenes: An Inside Look at the 2013 Webutante Ball (Photos)

May 24, 2013

As far as tech conferences go, the after party is often where the real magic happens -- connections are made, deals get inked, partnerships forged. Therein lies the beauty of the Webutante Ball, New York City's version of the Oscars minus all the boring awards shenanigans.

The brainchild of former Gawker video editor Richard Blakeley, the Webutante Ball is most often described as "Geek Prom," since the tie that binds is the internet and many of those in attendance -- regardless of their industry -- are involved in the web somehow. Plus, a king and queen get conferred at the event that's typically held during Internet Week NY each year.

But unlike traditional after-conference gatherings where beers and small talk pervade, the Webutante Ball asks attendees to look spiffy, cut a rug and enjoy cocktails with familiar monikers like "The Startup" and "The Cloud" while a set of DJs spin cheeky and fun tunes. Sounds like fun, right?
