While April can strike fear in the heart of any taxpayer, smart business owners know that tax season is really year-round, and good accounting practices can make the process less painful.

To help you get in control of your taxes, we asked Wayne Edmunds, an advisor to the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB) and a member of the AIPB's Certification Advisory Board to give us a few guidelines. Edmunds, who is also an associate professor of accounting at Virginia Commonwealth University as well as a CPA in private practice with Gregory and Associates in Petersburg, Virginia, provided the following commonsense tips:
