SHORT STINT: 2008 BMW M6 Coupe

We've heard complaints that the M6 (and M5, for that matter) is too heavy to be a proper sports car, but we beg to differ. Maybe it's just the juxtaposition of the allegedly lightweight 4,400-pound Jaguar and Audi sedans, but at 3,900 pounds, this BMW feels almost svelte for its size. And while we remain sold on the 3-series experience (and now the 1-series, as well), BMW does a superb job of taking that driving rush to the mega-level in the M6. The V10 hooked up to the six-speed manual (as opposed to the hard-to-manage SMG) makes for a strong combination, encouraging major rips through the power band, which is conveniently projected on the windshield to allow the driver to concentrate on the road without losing sight of an impending redline. The car jumps off the line at any speed and seems impervious to cornering forces. The steering, brakes, suspension and powertrain all scream BMW precision.
For those who can live without four doors, this coupe's sculpting is a rolling work of art, with all of the lines blending together to create an image of power and performance.

Be aware, though, that the gas gauge drops faster than you can imagine. It'd probably do better with a lighter foot, but where's the joy in having a V10 at your disposal and driving it like it's a Prius?
