There's nothing quite like the four-speed automatic option--at $1,325--to suck the life out of a good car. Don't get us wrong. This Astra is the best small car GM has offered in the Americas in a long, long time. It's just so much better, so much more enjoyable to drive, so much more engaging with the five-speed stick that comes standard.
The car is still a nice piece, from the firm ride to the exterior styling, from the massive sunroof to the clean and uncluttered interior. Some might suggest that the interior is a tad too uncluttered. We wouldn't, for example, object to the addition of an armrest or a center console, let alone a cupholder somewhere near where your hand falls. The Euro-interface instruments also take some getting used to, with their orange faces and unusual (at least for American cars) setups and controls. But it all works, and fairly simply, so we have no complaints.
