It's All About Social Networks

(Business Trends)

This was a good year for social networks. If a study by eMarketer is correct, 2008 will be even better. A MediaPost Publications article displays eMarketer's results, showing that ad spending on online social networks will nearly double to $2.2 billion in 2008. That's up from $1.2 billion this year. MySpace and Facebook claim about 70 percent of ad dollars. "The continued growth of social networking seems assured unless teens stop social networking as they become adults," said eMarketer senior analyst Debra Aho Williamson in a statement.

More Tofurky Talk

(Business News, Business Trends)

It may have a funny name, but Tofurky is taking the world by storm. We first mentioned it in a November article on Entrepreneur.com, and tonight, the alternative meat will make a TV appearance on The History Channel's show Modern Marvels. Tofurky's deli slices will be featured on the show along with cold cut favorites like salami and bologna. The Modern Marvels crew took a tour of Turtle Island Foods, manufacturers of Tofurky, to record the segment. Tune in tonight as the show walks viewers through how the faux meat deli slices are produced.

This episode airs Monday, December 17 at 8:00 p.m. EST.

Marketing Trends for 2008

(Business Trends, Marketing)

It's that time again--time for reflections on 2007 and predictions for the year ahead. Advertising Age has identified their top nine marketing trends to watch for in 2008, in addition to 10 micro-trends they say will affect Americans this upcoming year. The article says 2008 will be all about the economy and politics. With high fuel prices and tight credit, marketers will likely have a tough time as consumers curtail spending. However, political ad spending will help make up for "sluggish brand-marketing investments." Other trends include the power of strategic alignment, getting serious about accountability and media going digital.

As for micro-trends, watch out for retirees who continue working, sun haters advocating sun-safe clothing and permanent sunscreen, and more online relationships turning into marriages.
