NBC Joins Social Networking

(Business News, Business Trends, Tech)

Social networking sites have seen plenty of press coverage lately. With new sites emerging and already-established sites making new additions (like Facebook's offering of classified ads), it's no wonder social networking is hot these days. NBC is ready to get in the game with its fall launch of MyNBC, which will be integrated into NBC.com to encourage viewer interaction. The media conglomerate is following in the footsteps of sites like MySpace in hopes of boosting its digital offerings. To help in that effort, the site will debut a soap opera exclusive to NBC.com titled "Coastal Dreams."

In the Mix

(Business News)

Cold Stone Creamery, a franchise known for its customizable ice cream concept, has joined forces with leading quick-service franchise Kahala Corp. in a partnership that will house 13 diversified brands and greater franchising opportunities. With more than 3,000 franchises and more than 4,600 retail locations, Kahala-Cold Stone will give franchisees more options and the opportunity to branch out without leaving the franchise family. Among the quick-service restaurants available under the new company are Blimpie, Taco Time, The Great Steak and Potato Co., among others.

Kahala Corp. has always kept an eye on brands with excellent potential for growth. So as the fastest-growing ice cream concept in the United States, Cold Stone seemed a good fit for the merger. "Kahala-Cold Stone brings the best of both Kahala and Cold Stone Creamery together, including our combined passion, culture, innovation, branding, dedication and wealth of experience," said Doug Ducey, Cold Stone CEO and now CEO of Kahala-Cold Stone. "Together we will have tremendous motion."

Though specific terms of the transaction were not disclosed, the new company is comprised of brands that generate more than $1.1 billion in system-wide sales. Its expanded presence will place it among industry leaders and allow expansion into new distribution outlets, products and services, all while increasing franchisee profitability.--Lindsay Holloway

Trends We're Watching

(Business Trends)

If you like to be spontaneous, these trendy business ideas are for you. Pop-up hotels and boutique camping have become all the rage in Europe. They haven't yet made their way to the United States, but there's no reason they couldn't become just as popular here. Boutique Camping, which Springwise spotted abroad, offers upscale camping at summer music festivals. From teepees to beach huts, festival-goers can select their set-up of choice. They can even choose a furnished option including beds, rugs, lanterns and iPod docking stations. The camp sites also boast a clean bathroom with showers and toilets--not exactly your typical Woodstock.

Another trend to watch for is pop-up nightclubs. SoCo Cargo Experiment has been spotted in Australia and only takes one day to assemble. The venue usually includes a bar, stage and lounge, but can vary depending on the theme of the evening.--Kristin Edelhauser
