Buy or Sell a Biz on eBay

(Business Trends, E-Commerce, Marketing)

Last week we told you about the opportunity to buy your own band on eBay. Well, if that's not your thing, how about buying a business on eBay instead? Or selling the one you have? Though eBay is best known for the selling of consumer goods, like clothing or concert tickets, entrepreneurs are flocking to the site, saying it makes transactions faster and simpler. Recently, 10 internet companies have sought buyers through eBay, including SynapseLife, an online calendar and organizational site that sold for $60,000. If you're looking to sell your business, keep in mind that not all potential buyers are comfortable making a deal through eBay. But at least it gets your company's name out there and if someone's interested, they’ll most likely try to arrange a deal through other means.

Have Baby, Lose Job?

(HR and Management)

Giving birth and starting a family is typically a happy time for families. But some employers are making it tougher for expecting working women by causing them to lose their jobs after becoming pregnant. According to an MSNBC.com article, the number of pregnancy discrimination complaints is on the rise, and critics say it's cause for concern. Charges filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission jumped about 19 percent from 1997 to 2006. Employment lawyer Elaina Smiley said one of the issues pregnant workers argue over the most with employers is how much time they're allowed once the baby is born. The Family and Medical Leave Act says workers in a firm with 50 employees or more who have worked for the company for at least 12 months should receive 12 weeks of unpaid leave. It's not a bad idea to study up on your state's maternity and paternity leave, so you don't find yourself in a legal battle.
