Worst U.S. Air Travel This Summer

(Business News, HR and Management)

We first told you about the sour summer travel forecast last month. Well, unfortunately for summer travelers, that forecast is being confirmed in this LATimes.com article. According to the article, this summer is becoming the worst for U.S. air travel with passenger complaints skyrocketing 43 percent due to late domestic flights. The Transportation Department blames severe storms and more planes in the air for the delays. Airports that were able to avoid the bad weather, like LAX in Los Angeles, actually moved up in the rankings since 81 percent of their planes departed on time between January and June. Only five other airports had an on-time record of at least 80 percent—all on the West Coast. Chicago's O'Hare International Airport led the way of airports dropping in rank with a 65 percent ranking for on-time departures, followed by the airports in Cincinnati and Washington D.C.

An airline industry consultant blames the delays not on the bad weather, but on an antiquated air traffic control system. No matter what the reason, if your remaining summer plans include traveling by plane, make sure to allow extra time on both sides of your flight so you don't miss important meetings or events.

The Sun Goes Portable

(Business News, Tech)

We've all been there. You arrive on a business trip, get in your rental car and head to that all-important meeting only to discover your cell phone's dead and you forgot your car charger. Well the days of traveling with your bulky, wired charger are over. Check out this find from Daily Candy--a compact, lightweight charger made by Solio. It's called the Universal "Hybrid" Charger, and it can accept power from the wall socket or the sun. Not only can you use it to charge your cell phone, but it can also provide power for your iPod, PDA, game player, GPS, or digital camera. Not bad for one device. To give you an idea of the amount of power it stores, a fully charged Solio can charge a cell phone at least twice. Once the Solio is topped off with power, it can store energy for up to one year. Another cool perk: Interchangeable power tips let you power more than one device at the same time.

The World's Most-Read Blog

(Business News, Tech)

Who has the world's most-read blog? A gossip columnist? A scandalous celebrity? Answer: None of the above. According to this MSNBC.com article, it's a Chinese director by the name of Xu Jinglei. In July, Jinglei became the world's most popular blogger with 100 million page views within about 600 days. So what's the big attraction? Surprisingly, her blog isn't about anything too out-of-the-ordinary. Jinglei's blog, which she started in October 2005, focuses on her work and daily life. The 33-year-old actress-turned-director is perhaps best known for winning best director for "Letter From An Unknown Woman" at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in 2004.

Since hitting the 100 million mark on July 12, industry analysts say the site has received an additional two million more hits. The blog is, of course, in Chinese, but you can check out this attempt to translate Jinglei's blog in English. It's not exact, but can give you an idea of what the buzz is all about.
