The New Crop of iMacs

(Business News, Tech)

With hype for the iPhone still high after its release two months ago, Apple continued this year's run of new and upgraded products with the launch of the new iMac yesterday. Flaunting a thinner aluminum-and-glass casing and running with updated iLife and iWorks software, the new iMac was revealed at the company's Cupertino, California headquarters by Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

While the upgrades provide improved photo and video features and even a new spreadsheet program called Numbers, principal analyst Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group noted an unusually slower progress rate for Apple compared to its competitor Hewlett-Packard. Enderle said the new iMacs lack the touch features of the HP TouchSmart, for example, indicating that "for the past six months, the major work was on the iPhone, and it pretty much eclipsed everything else."

The iMacs are already available, with prices starting at $1,199. Up next for Apple? The fall announcement of Leopard, the newest version of Apple's OS X operating system, as well as a new iPod, which Enderle also expects to be unveiled later in the year.--Kevin Manahan

Illegal Immigrant Employers Beware

(Business News, HR and Management)

New regulations from the Department of Homeland Security are targeting the millions of illegal immigrant workers across the country using false Social Security numbers, as well as the employers who choose to hire them. The new rules include a stricter immigration enforcement system notifying employers that their workers' numbers do not match the Social Security Administration's records.

Under the proposed regulations, employers will be given a fixed period after notification to work out any information inconsistencies between a worker and the administration's records, after which the employer must fire the worker with unverifiable information or face up to $10,000 in fines. "We are tough, and we are going to be even tougher," said Department of Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke. "There are not going to be any more excuses for employers, and there will be serious consequences for those that choose to blatantly disregard the law."

This is particularly bad news for agricultural industries, where more than 70 percent of the workforce is made up of illegal immigrants. Many immigrant rights groups and labor unions argue that the regulations will only encourage discrimination against Hispanic laborers and will hurt the rights of workers in general.--Kevin Manahan

Fly the Internet-Friendly Skies

(Business News, Tech)

Good news for small-biz owners on the go. American Airlines announced it's teaming up with AirCell to offer internet access on domestic flights. According to AirCell, the service will go through a trial run starting in 2008 on American's 767-200 aircraft. Airlines have been clamoring to offer in-flight internet access to passengers for years, mainly to attract more business travelers. But in the past, the service has been too costly for airlines to consider. AirCell says its system is cheaper than that of Boeing's original satellite-based service, costing about $100,000 per plane to install the necessary equipment. Passengers who want to access the web 30,000 feet in the sky can expect a $10 fee per flight.

The next airline to watch for: Southwest Airlines says it hopes to draw more business travelers with a similar service in the near future.
