This Monday, millions of Americans will celebrate and honor the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. But one organization says there is still plenty of work to be done to realize the visions of Dr. King in the workplace. Today,
Charity Guide
launched a national campaign to promote African-American entrepreneurship by encouraging employees to spread the word about supplier-diversity in the office.
According to Charity Guide, African-Americans make up 13.4 percent of the United States population, and yet they only own 5 percent of American companies. A study done by the University of California at Santa Cruz also found that black-owned businesses are 20 percent more likely than white-owned businesses to fail within their first four years.
What's their solution? Charity Guide says supplier diversity needs to be mandated from within--meaning corporate employees should encourage their CEOs to take action. Charity Guide's campaign includes a
four-part supplier-diversity plan
that they hope will become integrated into corporate culture.
But you don't have to be a large corporation to encourage diversity. As a small-business owner, you have the power to start making changes within your own company right now. Take the time to think about the suppliers you work with on a daily basis, and what you can do to help promote fairness in the workplace.
