Sour Summer Travel Forecast

If you plan on flying this summer for business or pleasure, remember to pack a lot of patience. According to this New York Times article, delays are getting worse this year. In fact, airline on-time performance has reached an all-time low. But the official numbers aren't showing the worst of it, since the statistics track how late airplanes are, not how late passengers are. I had no idea that the longest delays that occur thanks to missed connections and canceled flights aren't even included in those official numbers. When researchers from M.I.T. did their own study and included missed connections and cancellations in the data, they found the average wait time was two-thirds longer than the official statistic. According to the article, researchers and consumer advocate groups have taken notice of this, and are urging more accurate data in the future.
