School Says - General Information
Emory University is internationally recognized for its outstanding liberal arts college, highly ranked professional schools, and comprehensive healthcare system. Emory College, the four-year undergraduate division of Emory University, offers a broad and rigorous liberal arts curriculum with over 70 majors and 55 minors to choose from. With only 5,500 undergraduates, Emory provides the resources and facilities you'd expect from a major research university but the small classes and faculty attention of a smaller liberal arts college. Take a look at all Emory has to offer; you'll see why Emory students feel inspired to do more with what they learn here.

School Says - Student Body
Emory students are highly involved in extracurricular activities, dedicating 6-10 hours per week to over 220 clubs, teams, and organizations. Whether it's Jazz Ensemble, intramural sports, The Emory Wheel (student newspaper), Concert Choir, or Outdoor Emory, there's an organization for you. Furthermore, eighty percent of our students share their passion for service and enthusiasm for Emory by volunteering on-campus and throughout the local community.

School Says - Academics
Undergraduate programs in humanities, sciences, business, and nursing allow Emory students to explore their interests and talents in the classroom and in the field. Our seven to one student/faculty ratio guarantees meaningful interaction between professors and students; ninety percent of classes have fewer than forty students and ninety percent of classes are taught by full-time faculty members. Unique seminar-style classes are required for all first-year students. Moreover, at Emory you won't just find students getting an education. Emory students are twice as likely to do research outside of the classroom as their peers. While studying environmental science, why not help build a greener building as part of the LEED initiative? Instead of simply reading about ancient history, why not help preserve mummies at the Carlos Museum on campus? How about transferring the class discussion during a political science seminar into an internship at a think tank or at the Georgia State Capitol? Take a look at the resources for learning at Emory and think about what you could do with them. You might discover the desire to choreograph modern dance or to develop an AIDS vaccine. Regardless of what you choose to tackle first, Emory will give you the tools to transform the world. In 2007, Emory celebrated many exciting faculty appointments and new acquisitions for the extensive archive collections, including: His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama was named Presidential Distinguished Professor at Emory University, the first university appointment accepted by the 1989 Nobel Peace Laureate and leader of the Tibetan exile community. Also joining the Emory faculty in 2007 was Sir Salman Rushdie, one of the world's most celebrated contemporary authors. RushdieÂ's 5 year appointment in the English Department as Distinguished Writer in Residence is his first extended relationship with a university and he will also place his archive at Emory's Woodruff Library. And in December 2007, Alice Walker, Pulitzer Prize-winner and internationally known Georgia-born novelist and poet, announced her plans to place her archive with Emory University.

School Says - Admissions
Emory's Admission Committee closely assesses high school coursework and grades. Within the context of the curriculum available at your high school, we determine if a student has taken the most rigorous courses possible. We also consider your extracurricular involvement, paying close attention to your commitment and leadership in after-school activities. SAT I and ACT (with writing) scores are important but not as important as the rigor of the coursework and grades earned. The middle 50th percent range for successful applicants is 640-730 for the SAT Critical Reading, 660-740 for SAT Math and 640-730 for the SAT Writing. The middle 50th percent range for the ACT (with writing) Composite is 29-33. Ninety percent of Emory's freshman class came from the top ten percent of their graduating high school class with an average GPA of 3.8.

School Says - Campus Life
One of Emory's most compelling features is its proximity to the vibrant city of Atlanta. Located only fifteen minutes from downtown, Emory's campus is situated on 635 acres of property in the historic residential neighborhood of Druid Hills. As home to more than 700 of the country's Fortune 1000 companies, Atlanta has become a cultural, technological, and financial hub of both the Southeast and the nation. In fact, with one of the largest college student populations nationwide and endless cultural, intellectual, and social opportunities, Atlanta ranks as one of the best college towns in the United States.

Students Say - Academics
Students rise to the challenge at Emory University, an academically impressive school that supports its students in their individual endeavors in and out of the classroom. Though academics can be difficult, students prove more than capable, and the in-it-togetherness helps things sail even more smoothly. Students "get together for study sessions regularly and are always cooperative and helpful to one another," and the "FirstClass system," a social networking application that allows students to post questions online so that other students or professors can answer, helps further discussions. Many who attend Emory are career-oriented from the start, and business and pre-med are popular tracks. The school also stresses the development of students on a cultural and social front, providing "a multitude of enriching speakers, environments, and unique opportunities" designed to do just that. The "forward-driven" administration is "extremely accessible," particularly the well-liked president, who holds regular office hours to discuss anything and everything on students' minds (and whose wife regularly dispenses homemade cookies). Many of the teachers also follow suit. "Office hours aren't a chore for professors; they enjoy getting to know the students on a more personal level." Small classes make the professors "very approachable," and they receive high marks for their compassion and accessibility, not to mention knowledge and experience. "It's pretty cool to be taught by experts in your field," says one political science major. Professors do "expect you to live up to their expectations," but the workload at Emory is "very manageable," and there are countless outside tutoring and paper-editing resources available to students in times of need. "My professors have always been incredibly interested in what I'm getting out of my classes," says a student. While a few students do just enough to get by, "many try very hard and do go above and beyond" what is required of the classes.

Students Say - Campus Life
Life at the "safe, separate, suburban campus" is just as exciting as life in nearby Atlanta, which provides the standard theater, concert, bar, and restaurant distractions. The student government association sponsors shuttles to various things including a weekly shuttle to the mall, and "there are always all sorts of events going on around campus-and actually interesting events, not just hippie drum circles and the like." Greek life and events are fairly popular but not overwhelming. People tend to be preoccupied with grades and academics Sunday through Thursday, but come Thursday night, campus tends to ease up a bit. While there "is certainly a contingent of Emory that drinks, and/or drinks heavily," many people do not, and "there's a great social life regardless of what side of the 'drinking spectrum' you are on." Students at Emory are "intellectually engaged," and lounges and dorm rooms are rife with discussions of politics and sustainability. Most students "find an organization to be highly involved with that keeps them busy most of the time," and if they aren't a part of some organization, then students will spend more time studying or seeking out Atlanta's entertainment scene.

Students Say - Student Body
This "diverse and tolerant campus" has all sorts of unique characters; as one sophomore puts it, "I'm not saying there are large numbers of people who wear capes to class. There's a few, obviously, but not half of the student body." From an ethnic standpoint, Emory's financial aid department "truly provides for many students," and all races and backgrounds are represented, though there are a fair number of Jewish students. "I learn a lot more from class discussions that involve people from other backgrounds," says a student. Students at Emory tend to be very involved in extracurricular activities and community service, and they often don't require additional encouragement from the faculty-these activities are also where students tend to make most of their friends. Hard workers though they may be, "the typical student also enjoys going out. The atypical student simply doesn't go out as much."
