A cost-effective public school in the San Francisco Bay Area, California State University East Bay offers an MBA program that is "the perfect blend of affordability and expediency." "Perfectly suited for working adults," the "flexible schedule options" and evening classes make the program convenient for professionals who live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area. In fact, "The vast majority of our students also work full time and the school makes it easy to integrate a course load into their life." While working professionals predominate in the MBA class, CSUEB attracts students from "various experience levels." Those with more time to devote to their studies can "finish the program in one year." To top off the return on investment, CSUEB's low in-state tuition cost is "significantly less than other schools in the area." Fortunately, the low cost does not translate into hassles and red tape; the business school is well run. A student reassures us, "I have found the administration within the business school to be much more organized and accommodating than within the university as a whole. I get answers quickly and access to information when I need it."
The MBA curriculum is divided into proficiency requirements, fundamental courses, core courses, and option courses. Proficiency requirements can be waived if a student has completed equivalent coursework in these areas; however, students are not required to complete the proficiency courses before applying to the program. In addition, students must complete a course in Globalization, Innovation, and Sustainability, as well as a capstone experience, which usually takes the form of a real-life project experiential learning. One of the benefits of a CSUEB degree is that students have the opportunity to focus on their education on one of a range of business specialties, including entrepreneurship, finance, human resources and organizational behavior, information technology management, marketing management, international business, or operations and supply chain management.
CSUEB maintains a strong "reputation in the area," and the administration has been steering the school on a steady course of improvement. While the teaching staff can be "hit or miss, with some excellent and some terrible" professors, the school has recently "brought in new talented teachers" to the program. In the school's MBA program, as well as their graduate programs in economics and taxation, you'll find "Great professors who have first hand knowledge of the outside business world." Fellow students also contribute to the learning experience through their "interesting and very diverse working experience that enable valuable contribution in class discussions."
Students Say - Admissions
To be considered for admission at California State University East Bay, students must score in the 20th percentile of the GMAT in both the verbal and quantitative sections. Students must also have a GPA of at least 2.5 for all upper division undergraduate coursework as well as minimum index score of 1050 (Upper Division GPAx 200) + total GMAT score. Exceptions to these minimum requirements are rarely made.
Students Say - Campus Life
Located in the Oakland suburb of Hayward, California, CSUEB is enviably positioned near both San Francisco and the Silicon Valley. Drawing a largely local population, CSUEB is "generally a commuter school" for both undergraduates and graduate students. At the same time, students report that the school "has been slowly growing to change its identity," incorporating more student life and activities into campus culture. At the same time, most busy business students commute to school while working full-time, and, therefore, they do not always have the opportunity to participate in any extracurricular activities or take advantage of the campus. Nonetheless, attending CSUEB is comfortable and convenient, and "the Valley Business center is excellent."
Drawing its student population from the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as internationally, diversity is a mainstay of the CSUEB experience. Within the business school, you'll meet "lots of international students" from "diverse backgrounds," which, in the classroom, translates into an "excellent experience for a global economy." Students say, "CSU East Bay is exceptionally diverse and it is difficult to pigeonhole the students-they are young, old, of all races and ethnicities, from all kinds of industries, and many of them are married, with children."
Students Say - Careers
Academic Advising and Career Education at CSUEB serves the school's undergraduate and graduate community. The AACE organizes job fairs and other campus recruiting events, while also offering counseling services aimed specifically at graduate students. While the school lacks a dedicated MBA career office, there are plenty of resources for MBA candidates. A current student attests, "I was able to get advice on transitioning into a new field (Finance from Retail), access to an almost overwhelming number of positions to apply for, and access to a wide field of employers. I was able to secure interviews with 10 different employers, multiple offers, and a position in my new field paying significantly more than my previous position as a tenured manager-all through my campus career development center." At the end of the 2008 school year, 89 percent of graduate students from the School of Business and Economics were successfully employed or accepted to academic programs to pursue further studies. According to the Academic Advising and Career Education's Success Report, graduate students from the College of Business and Economics had a salary range of $20,000 to $150,000, with an average salary of $73,250.
