Students Say - Academics"Fusing the art, science, and technology of business," Boston University's MBA programs provide a well-rounded and well-respected business education, which can be effectively tailored to each student's career goals and interests. In the first year, BU's "well-planned cohort curriculum" promotes "integration across multiple curricula to teach not only independent subjects but also how they interact with one another." You'll get "a good mix between case [study] discussion and lecture" in the classroom, and "There is a heavy emphasis on teamwork and presentation skills." In fact, "intensive group projects" are a part of every class, and students insist that "When you leave this program, you definitely know how to manage people and their personalities." The program is challenging, and "The workload is very tough, especially the first semester." A full-time student admits, "Everyone pulls at least one all-nighter and people who are from the area joke about never seeing their other friends anymore." Part-timers are no less challenged, though they assure us that, "Teachers are understanding of our busy schedule[s] and cater their assignments appropriately." The ability to tailor your education is an important aspect of the BU MBA, which distinguishes itself through various specialty degrees and concentrations. Currently, the business school confers 10 dual degreesâ"such as the MS/MBA in public and nonprofit managementâ" as well as numerous elective concentrations, like a "well-regarded health sector management concentration." The school's "great electives" include special programs like the international field seminars. In addition, students praise the "breadth of course offerings" within the business school, as well as in the larger university (business students can cross-register in related departments, like international relations.) Boston University has no trouble attracting top-notch faculty to its MBA program. "The accomplishments and abilities of the professors are nothing short of astounding. Many of them [are] Ivy League PhDs with decades of teaching experience." However, there is "a good mix of career academics and individuals with real world experience" on the teaching staff at BU, with many Boston-area professionals who "provide great insight about different industries." Best of all, "All classes are taught by faculty (most tenured, some PT professionals) and never by TAs." Outside the classroom, BU professors are "very outgoing, always willing to help, and even willing to come out with our class for a drink every now and then." Similarly supportive, "The administration helps coordinate a lot of activitiesâ¦plan for classes, and is very responsive to students' concerns." When planning your business school curriculum, "academic advisors are always available to help." "The school administration is really open to feedback. Each year the new class has new changes that are implemented based upon feedback collected from the previous year."
Students Say - Admissions
Applicants to the BU MBA program must submit the following materials: a completed application; a current resume; personal essays, in response to application questions; two letters of recommendation; official copies of transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate work; and an official GMAT score report. Interviews are required for some applicants and are scheduled at the request of the school. In addition to the above materials, international students must also submit an official score report for the TOEFL or IELTS (students whose first language is other than English only; minimum TOEFL score of 250 on paper-based exam, 250 on the old computer-based exam; minimum IELTS score of 7 across each band); a financial declaration; copies of all current visa or I-20 documentation; and a copy of the initial passport page.
Students Say - Campus Life
One major benefit of Boston University's MBA program is that you will instantly begin building a local network with your talented classmates. The admissions department makes a point of admitting an interesting and accomplished student body, and "The class is extremely diverse with both international and domestic students from around the nation. While the intellect of my fellow classmates was a little intimidating at first, everyone is very friendly which makes networking effortless." The emphasis on group work promotes bonds between students. A current student enthuses, "I absolutely loved the students on my team and my cohort is very cohesive and social!" At the clean and modern BU business school, "Each classroom is designed beautifully and provides the latest technologies." A hub of social and cultural opportunities, the Boston University campus is located "right in the middle of the city," within easy walking distance to countless attractions. Part-time, full-time, married, single, working, or otherwise, "Everyone finds time to bond and go out for appetizers or drinks before or after classes, which makes for a very friendly and social environment." "A different student club hosts Thirsty Thursday each week where everyone gathers together at a bar for relaxing and socializing." Even if you take classes in the evening, you can also share in the fun. A current student tells us, "The activities provided for evening students are fun and engaging, and we are provided all the same opportunities as full-time students."
Students Say - Careers
At BU, the Feld Career Center begins working with students during their very first week on campus, and career advisors offer individual counseling, resume critiques, mock interviews, and recruiting events throughout the year. Students say, "the Career Center does a great job networking and attracting many companies to BU," and evening students enjoy "the same Career Center fairs/services open to full-time and part-time students." Students say "The school really does healthcare and IT well. Alot of the big companies in those fields recruit here." However, students admit that, "outside those fields it gets a little more difficult" to find an excellent job. With its stellar Boston location, BU students "have great access to the city and its resources, as well as the alumni base here." In recent years, 90 to 95 percent of BU graduates had a job within three months of graduation. Companies recruiting at BU include Adobe, AT&T, Chevron, Hewlett Packard, Fidelity, New Balance, Philips Healthcare, and Staples.
