Best Business Schools (International)
Students Say - AcademicsQueen's University quickly burst onto many prospective MBAs' radars in 2004, when BusinessWeek magazine named it the number one international MBA program. The school was no secret to Canadian and international employers, though; in fact, their high regard for Queen's MBAs contributed substantially to the lofty biennial BW ranking which was awarded again in 2006 and 2008. Queen's full-time MBA uses a team-based approach to learning that mirrors today's progressive workplace. Participants work one-on-one with Personal Development Coaches throughout the program. This innovative approach to personal development enables participants to identify, enhance, and fully leverage their personal strengths. Queen's offers a great return on investment, thanks to a 12-month calendar that allows students "to return to the work force faster." Like most one-year MBAs, the Queen's MBA "is very intense and the course load is pretty heavy." A "very strong team-based learning" approach permeates all classes. All students here are assigned to a single team for the duration of the program, and "a significant portion of a student's overall marks is derived from group work." The idea is to model the team atmosphere in which students will work throughout their careers. With 110 students each year, Queen's runs a program that "allows the administration and students to get to know each other very well." The result is a happy student body: MBAs tell us that the "amazing administration couldn't be more helpful. It is amazingly receptive to any requests." Likewise, professors are regarded as "warm-hearted, committed, responsible, open-minded, and talented." Most of all, students appreciate the school's "excellent reputation, which is on the upswing across the world."
Students Say - Admissions
Minimum requirements for admission to the Queen's MBA program include: a four-year undergraduate degree from a recogonized university and two years work experience. Most admitted students have an undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.3 and a GMAT score of at least 600. Students whose first language is not English must submit a score for the TOEFL, IELTS, or MELAB. A cover letter and resume, three letters of reference, and three short-answer essays-all of which can be completed online-are also required. If you are neither a Canadian citizen nor a permanent resident of Canada you must apply for a Study Permit from the Canadian government in order to enter Canada to enroll in this program. Depending on your country of citizenship you may also be required to have a Temporary Resident Visa to enter Canada. You should begin the application process as soon as you receive your offer of admission from Queen's.
Students Say - Campus Life
Queen's one-year curriculum means "a hectic academic schedule" that leaves little free time. As one student notes, "Despite efforts to balance our lifestyles as students, our lives are school. Since the program is only one year long, our friends and families are very accepting of this fact." Life here generally consists of "classes followed by preparation assignments, exams, projects, and presentations." There are opportunities to blow off steam, however "the school organizes numerous social events such as a cruise and hockey games," for example. Most popular of all is the "Point Four" club, a "tradition that has the whole class going out for drinks every Thursday night. This tradition is continued in numerous cities in Canada after graduation." The origin of the club's name, incidentally, is the notion that "going out one day a week will only reduce your grade by 0.4 percent." MBAs in this high-caliber program are "very bright and intelligent" and the community "friendly and close-knit," qualities that are assets to the team-oriented approach to learning. The international nature of the student body means that "people can talk about issues in North America as easily as issues in Africa or Asia."
Students Say - Careers
Career and placement services to MBA students at Queen's School of Business are provided by personal career managers, who offer "one-on-one coaching to help you explore your career options and chart your career path." Career managers assist students with practice interviews, resume counseling, and self-assessment instruments. Numerous online job postings are available through the Business Career Centre, which also coordinates studentalumni contacts. Typically, about 35 percent of Queen's MBAs find their first post-degree jobs in finance. High tech and telecommunications positions account for 25 percent and management consulting 20 percent. Placement statistics show that 93 percent of the graduating class had positions six months out.
