Best Business Schools (Northeast)
Students Say - AcademicsJust a stone's throw away from the vibrant business community in New York City, Rutgers University is a large and prestigious public school that provides a "great value" education to 1,600 graduate students. Offering a "wide variety of high-quality courses at an in-state tuition rate," Rutgers students may choose between several MBA options: a full-time MBA in Newark, New Jersey, a flexible part-time MBA and Executive MBA on multiple New Jersey campuses, and a one-year International MBA in China. With campuses across the Garden State (and two in China), "Rutgers is a large school with an overwhelming number of resources at the fingertips of students." The schools sustains "depth and variety" within the required core courses, as well as an extensive selection of advanced elective offerings. At Rutgers, MBA candidates may concentrate their studies on finance, information technology, management and global business, marketing, pharmaceutical management, and supply chain management, or they may choose a custom concentration, such as business and the arts. A current student explains, "Excellent staff and a wide variety of course offerings allow a student to challenge themselves in areas that interest them while developing broad-based business skills." Within the "multidimensional curriculum," the school prides itself on its focus on science and technology, maintaining close partnerships with many relevant businesses in the greater region, including New York City. In particular, the unique "pharmaceutical medicine concentration" draws many students to the program. Despite the school's impressive scope, Rutgers maintains "smaller class sizes" and a friendly teaching staff. Students laud the "the real-world, relevant experience of the faculty"; in fact, most, "professors come from incredibly impressive professional backgrounds, including a portfolio manager for one of the largest funds in the world." Through the faculty, as well as through guest speakers, Rutgers "brings its corporate connections into the classroom," giving students an edge up in the business world. Fellow students are another source of business expertise, and, in the classroom, you'll rub elbows with "intellectual, well-educated, well-rounded individuals with diverse opinions. They challenge thoughts and ideas and are very receptive to critical view points of their own ideas as well." Given the school's size, you might be surprised to learn that Rutgers is well-run and managed by an "extremely friendly staff." In particular, "The Student Services, Admissions, and Office of Career Management staffs are actively involved in students' lives. They attend student organization events and meetings, and are very helpful to students organizing different initiatives." A student adds, "Dropping and adding classes was a breeze and you can even meet with the Dean of the entire program if you need to."
Students Say - Admissions
Admission to the business programs at the Newark and New Brunswick campuses is conducted at two different admissions offices, and student must apply accordingly. The fulltime program is only available at the Newark campus. There are no minimum GMAT score requirements or GPA requirements (nor does the school prefer students from any particular academic background); however, at least two years of professional work experience is strongly recommended. In some cases, the admissions committee may request an interview with an MBA candidate.
Students Say - Campus Life
A truly "diverse" community, Rutgers attracts "outstanding and friendly people from diverse social and geographical backgrounds." For students at the Newark campus, "There are many restaurant and cafeteria options within walking distance where students can gather, study, and participate in events for the community." In addition, "Public transportation is effective and easy," allowing students easily travel to school by train, or take a trip to New York City. A student agrees, "It is very nice to be able to go to school in New Jersey by train, and visit NYC at any time and with any of my peers, easily and quickly." At the same time, students complain that "The area around the campus is only moderately well-policed" and safety is a concern. Despite the convenience of public transportation, most part-timers "live off campus and commute by car," rarely lingering on campus. Astudent details, "We all know each other very well, but do not spend time on campus unless we have class or meetings." While part-time students have less time for socializing, "There is plenty of social interaction among the full-time students." On campus "there are many clubs and activities," and "Many full-time students socialize every afternoon in the RBS student lounge where they eat, have group meetings, and just relax before class." A student shares, "Everyone has gotten to know one another this semester and most of us know every student's name in our class of 90 people."
Students Say - Careers
You will receive excellent, personalized career assistance at Rutgers. "The career services department is excellent" and the accessible staff will "help you with resumes, cover letters and mock interviews. They also get feedback from companies after your interviews." A current student attests, "My relationship with the Office of Career Management (OCM) has been very rewarding as well. The administrators of OCM go to great lengths to bring top companies to recruit on campus and readily go to bat for students who seek positions at companies that would normally only recruit from ivy league schools." For a small fee, Rutgers alumni may also use the resources at the Career Services department. With its excellent pharmaceutical program, Rutgers maintains great "connections with pharmaceutical industry," as well as excellent "connections to New Jersey businesses" (though some students would like to see "better connection to businesses in New York.") In addition, "Rutgers Newark is home to a number of non-profit businesses including Small Business Development Center, which helps entrepreneurs prepare business plans and start their own businesses."
