Best Business Schools (Midwest)
Students Say - Academics
Students come to Wright State University for its excellent blend of affordability, convenience, and local reputation. "Cost is competitively low for the MBA program, in comparison to other schools," yet Wright State students laud the university's "commitment to expand both regionally and globally thus strengthening the value of my MBA." Alargely part-time program, the school caters to the needs of working professionals. As such, "Coursework is challenging, but sensitive to the time constraints of the full-time working students." Scheduling is specifically designed to meet the needs of professionals: classes start every quarter (including summer) and "night classes are a central portion of the curriculum." On top of that, students appreciate the ease of registering for classes, which are rarely impacted or unavailable. Acurrent student explains, "I know there will always be a spot for me…I don't have to worry about anything besides attending class and making the grades." Many part-time programs attempt to offer the same benefits as a fulltime MBA, but Wright State really delivers. Even the "international trips are planned during Spring Break," which makes it easier for part-time students to participate. Astudent elaborates, "I have been able to study abroad in Paris and China and meet with world renowned professors and business executives. When I tell people this, they are always surprised and were not aware this was an option in the part-time program." Academically, as well as logistically, Raj Soin caters to the needs of students at every stage in their career. While many students are working professionals, business newbies say the school offers "excellent survey courses in business classes for non-business undergraduates." On the other hand, for those with more experience, foundation coursework can be waived. Wright State operates a "curriculum that is discussion-oriented not lecture-based," and many feel "The interaction within the classes is a major strength of the program." Learning, rather than grades, is the focus of the classroom experience, and "The faculty all seem really motivated to deliver value to the student." Open-minded, engaging, and "approachable," Raj Soin professors "entertain questions and are willing to discuss alternate points of view." In the classroom, "Students are encouraged to share present day experiences that relate to the material," enhancing the experience for everyone in the program. With lively discussions dominating the academic experience, Wright State "fosters creativity and innovation." While there are no practicum or internship requirements within the curriculum, the Wright State MBA focuses on material that "applies to the real world business environment." "The classes are generally applicable to current events," and recently, many class topics have been "structured around the current economic downturn." With a faculty that boasts both academic and professional prowess, "Many of the professors bring real industry knowledge and experience to the classroom, which helps translate textbook terms into reality."

Students Say - Admissions
To apply to Wright State University, student must submit a graduate school application, official GMAT scores, official undergraduate transcripts, and the names and contact information for at least three references. Strong admissions candidates will have a high undergraduate GPA (or an upward trend in their undergraduate studies) and high GMAT scores.

Students Say - Campus Life
To accommodate the scheduling needs of working students, the bulk of Wright State classes are offered in the evenings. As a result, "The graduate program definitely seems to come alive at night, when everyone gets off work and comes in early to study before class." Students are happy to find comfortable and up-to-date facilities in the business school, including "very modern equipment in our classrooms." In addition, business students have access to all the amenities of the larger Wright State campus, which include "one of the best day care facilities in the city." While many say they only visit campus to attend classes, others come to "work in the computer lab and library, and use the gym." In fact, the "Library system is wonderful and connected to several organizations in the community." For those who'd like to get involved in the student community, "There is a diverse array of student clubs and organizations for students to join, as well as events and festivals which take place throughout the year. There are both on-campus and off-campus professional groups for MBA students, as well as for undergraduate students at the college of business." Students also gather more informally. For example, a student tells us, "Our graduate cohort sometimes gets together after milestones such as end of projects, after tests, and at the end of the quarter."

Students Say - Careers
Many Wright State students are already employed, with a number receiving tuition reimbursement from their current employer. As such, many MBA candidates are not looking for a new job after graduation. Even so, students benefit from ample networking opportunities through the school's well-connected faculty, alumni, and student body. In fact, your classmates will likely be your best business contacts in the future. A current student explains, "All of the students in my cohort have grown very close and I think we will have relationships that extend far beyond our graduation." In addition, there are more than 17,000 Wright State business school alumni. For those looking to begin a new career after graduation, Raj Soin maintains a "well-known brand name in the local markets," and MBA students have access to the university Career Services center. The staff at Career Services can help with internship or co-op placements, and they host recruiting days and job fairs. Students say there are an "Array of employers coming in for recruiting" at Wright State, many from Dayton and the surrounding region.
