School Says - General Information
Founded in 1836, Emory & Henry is the oldest college in Southwest Virginia. It is one of the few Southern colleges to have operated more than 170 years under the same name and with the same affiliation: the United Methodist Church. The campus and surrounding village is home to students as well as E&H professors, administrators and retired college employees. It is an academic environment that underscores the broad dedication within the community to each student's enlightenment and success.

School Says - Student Body
Students at Emory & Henry are encouraged to take part in campus decision making. They have voting representatives on nearly every faculty committee and on the Board of Trustees. The central body in campus government is the Student Senate, which brings together representatives of the student body, faculty, and administration. Students have opportunities for involvement in a variety of campus activities: service clubs, Christian fellowship, fraternities, sororities, sports clubs, honor groups, and multicultural groups. Student staffs produce a yearbook, an online magazine, and a literary magazine; others operate a 9,000-watt FM public radio station with a coverage area that extends some 40 miles beyond the campus. Musically talented students have opportunities to participate in a choral program and a pep band. The prestigious Concert Choir has toured throughout the United States and in parts of Europe. The Barter Theatre, a professional theater in nearby Abingdon, works with Emory and Henry College to provide a theater education program that integrates college-level drama study with the benefits of experience on a professional stage.

School Says - Academics
Emory & Henry College is a transformative academic community. Our education is distinguished by progress - sometimes sudden, sometimes gradual - toward an expanded sense of personal potential and an enlightened sense of civic responsibility. This transformation, this increase in excellence, is the foundation of our campus culture. Its impact is lasting and profound. Emory & Henry offers a liberal arts program with an emphasis on writing, reasoning, value inquiry, and knowledge of global concerns. All students complete a core curriculum that integrates classroom work with study and research beyond the classroom - and the campus, ultimately contributing to a deep understanding of regional and cultural differences and challenges. The core curriculum includes an emphasis on student proficiencies in writing, communication, quantitative literacy, ethical reasoning and critical thinking. Undergraduate programs of study include art, athletic training, biology, business administration, chemistry, computer information management, economics, education, English, geography, history, languages, mass communications, mathematics, music, philosophy, physical education, physics, political science, psychology, religion, sociology and anthropology, and theater. Special and interdisciplinary programs of study offered are environmental studies, international studies, pre-engineering, pre-law, pre-medicine, and public policy and community service. Emory & Henry operates on a semester calendar from late August to mid-December and from mid-January to mid-May. A summer session runs from late May to early July. First-year students typically carry a four-course load of 13 to 14 credit hours per semester. Upperclass students carrying a full load complete five courses (14 to 15 credit hours) each semester. Thirty-eight courses are required for graduation. Classes meet on Monday-Wednesday-Friday or Tuesday-Thursday schedules. One important feature of the Emory & Henry curriculum is its orientation toward helping students make a smooth transition from high school to college. The Powell Resource Center provides academic support, advising, career services, and personal counseling. The Writing Center helps students in every department to use writing for effective communication.

School Says - Admissions

Students who wish to be considered for talent-based and merit-based scholarships in art, music, theatre, pre-health, pre-ministry and the Honors Program must apply through this program.
