"Here's the scoop, according to an outdoor education major: "You cannot find better professors than those at Montreat College. Imagine hanging out with your professors as friends, going mountain biking and rock climbing together, sharing meals together, etc. If you are seeking community, you will find it at Montreat." A classmate gushes, "My teachers are very approachable and show concern for me." Not only do the professors dole out personal attention aplenty, but they're also responsible for the "well-rounded education" that Montreat's undergrads enjoy. Nonetheless, some students would like to see the faculty raise the bar a little. "Well, the school itself is pretty easy," says a sophomore. "I think I had more homework in high school." Montreat's administration receives mixed reviews. For instance, one environmental studies major claims that the administration is "disorganized and takes the defensive side very quickly." But a creative writer assures, "The administration is very open to students' opinions." Whatever their thoughts on the college machinery, most students are thrilled about "being trained in God's word and having friends and professors mentor and lead you to a better understanding of who Christ is and who you are.""
Students Say - Campus Life
"Montreat College, a small, Christian liberal arts school in the Appalachian hills of western North Carolina, is the ideal place for a religious outdoorsperson in search of some good, clean fun. According to one junior, "For fun you may chill around the dorm or student center, watch a movie with a group of friends, attend a soccer or volleyball game, go to a student coffeehouse/open mic, hike one of the many trails in Montreat, participate in intramural basketball or Ultimate [Frisbee], or head into Asheville." In fact, it's only "20 minutes to Asheville," which is a regional hot spot for culture and the arts. As a sophomore notes, Asheville offers more than just restaurants, concerts, and movie theaters: "A lot of students are involved with a homeless ministry in downtown Asheville." In addition, "various boys and girls clubs or Young Life" are popular service activities. What's not so popular is putting back a couple of drinks. A senior acknowledges, "I am 23 and like to go to bars and watch games and have a few beers, but many students look down on drinking and smoking cigarettes on many levels." So, what is the most significant activity at Montreat? "Striving to know God more and more.""

""'While Montreat's "community embraces a wide range of personalities," one undergrad points out that the college could be more tolerant than it is. There are "rules" stating "that any student with beliefs that are a threat to the Christian students' well-being can be kicked out, as well as [a] rule stating that the same applies to homosexuals." Another Montreat student charges that those who "are not Protestant must pretend to be so in order to pass classes." So yes, it's fair to say that the "very religious" Montreat College "is somewhat a âbubble' from the outside world"---but most students love the "strict" nature of the school. The college's typical student is "White, middle class, athletic, [and] Christian." Many of these undergrads were "either in Christian school or homeschooled" before arriving on campus. They all share a strong sense of pride in "the uber-cool Montreat community"---a place where "most everyone" shares "knowledge of Christianity and has a personal faith in Jesus Christ.""
