As Wisconsin's largest private university, Marquette University offers endless opportunities: the chance to live, study and play in the heart of a dynamic city; nationally known programs and powerhouse faculty; a Catholic, Jesuit tradition that emphasizes ethics and lifelong values. For more than 127 years, we have inspired students to Be The Difference in their professional and personal lives.
Our more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students come from all 50 states and 70 countries to create a vibrant, diverse, residential learning experience. They learn from professors who believe that there is such a thing as a student-centered university that conducts world-class research.
Our rigorous academic programs are recognized for challenging students to grow intellectually, socially and spiritually. Our demanding core curriculum is grounded in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. This liberal arts core, coupled with a student's academic major, provides the balance of knowledge a student will need to succeed as a professional - and a person.
At Marquette, you'll have instant access to top-notch professors who win international awards and grants, publish influential works, and conduct cutting-edge research. And you won't just hear about that research. You'll have the chance to conduct it with faculty mentors, helping to advance your field while getting unrivaled experience.
You will have a diverse experience. As one of approximately 8,000 undergraduates, you will meet students who look, think and act very much like you - and more who don't. More than 90 percent of freshmen live on campus, so you're sure to find your niche in the Marquette family.
We'll ask you tough questions: "What do you believe in?" "What do you stand for?" "Why?" You will be challenged to lead a thoughtful, reflective life.
You will be encouraged to find God in all things. Through retreats, religious services, prayers and conversations within the university community, Marquette fosters an environment that nurtures spiritual growth for students of all faiths.
U.S. News & World Report ranks Marquette 84th among the nation's top 100 universities in the 2010 edition of "America's Best Colleges," and Marquette is one of 44 schools named a "Best Buy School" in the 2010 edition of the Fiske Guide to Colleges. Schools are chosen based on the quality of academic offerings in relation to the cost of attendance.
School Says - Student Body
With about 250 student organizations vying for your time, you won't be bored at Marquette. And because most of our students spend their weekends on campus, there's plenty to do here and around the city. Our students also don't hesitate to get out into the community, and 90 percent of undergraduates participate in service through a wide range of programs, student organizations, service-learning classes and one-day projects.
And when it comes to sports, you're at the right place. Whether you're a big-time intercollegiate athlete or a die-hard spectator, Marquette offers a huge variety of opportunities, including 14 varsity teams that compete in the NCAA Division I Big East Conference. If club and recreational sports are more your speed, we have about 50 coed, men's or women's clubs and intramural teams.
School Says - Academics
At the heart of all Marquette academic programs is the University Core of Common Studies. You'll take courses in nine knowledge areas designed to teach you how to examine, engage and evaluate the world: rhetoric, mathematical reasoning, individual and social behavior, diverse cultures, literature, history of cultures and societies, science and nature, human nature and ethics, and theology. These courses will teach you how to understand and be understood, to act responsibly, and to think for yourself.
Marquette is a direct-entry university, allowing you to begin studying your major right away. Because you can deepen your interest, knowledge and expertise early, you'll practice what you've learned through internships in and beyond Milwaukee. If you are undecided about a major, your academic adviser can help find the right fit for your passions and abilities.
School Says - Admissions
For all of its academic programs, Marquette has a priority admission deadline of December 1 (postmark date). Applications postmarked after December 1 will be considered on a space-available basis for admission and scholarship. Admission decisions are based on a thorough review of course selection, academic performance (grade point average), class rank (when applicable), ACT and/or SAT, recommendations, essay, and extracurricular activities. Visit www.marquette.edu/explore for more information about deadlines and requirements.
School Says - Campus Life
With a metro population of almost one million, Milwaukee has all the bonuses you'd expect from a big city - like the arts, major-league sports, fantastic restaurants and shopping - with fewer of the hassles. And right at the heart of the city is Marquette's 90-acre campus, giving you easy access to everything Milwaukee has to offer, including internships, service opportunities and social activities. Your Marquette education will extend from campus classrooms to the larger, more expansive classroom that is the city. It's a place where you can connect what you're learning with what you can do with it.
School Says - Cost Aid
Full-time tuition for 2010-11 is $30,040. Room and board averages about $9,680, depending on location and meal plan.We recognize that Marquette is a great place, but we also know that private school tuition can be rather expensive. That's why the university offers a variety of partial to full-tuition, merit-based scholarships. To apply for need-based financial aid, Marquette requests that you file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Financial need that is demonstrated on this form determines our ability to award federal, state, and university-funded grants and loans, as well as some forms of student employment.
Students Say - Academics
Looking for a school with a "dedication to academic excellence," and an "involved and intelligent" student body an "open-minded attitude"? Then the Jesuit ideals at Marquette where "people are dedicated to helping others, are incredibly motivated to do well, and hopefully one day, change the world," may be for you. This medium-sized Milwaukee school manages to be "pretty well run," and students rave about their professors. One junior tells us, "The professors strive to know you personally and to help you achieve your goals," while one communications major "LOVES, LOVES, LOVES every professor" in her college. One student goes as far as to say, "I haven't had much of an experience with the administration, but it is clear that professors here work because they are committed to the Jesuit way of education and are truly willing to help students in any way possible." However, great professors will only get you so far, "the education you receive at Marquette is what you put into it. The resources are available to you...You just have to reach out and take personal responsibility." Though the school seems to run fairly smoothly, "if you do not get a decent registration slot, prepare for extra years of college." But barring a few minor com- plaints, students seem to agree "the teachers and administrators work to challenge you so that accomplishment is truly your own and learning is at its high- est standard."
Students Say - Campus Life
As you might expect from a school located in a major city, Marquette students' social lives tend to lead them downtown where they "usually head out to eat and hang out. The city is so big people can actually do anything and are rarely restricted to some activities." Students do know how to let loose. "The lifestyle at Marquette is drinking alcohol on the weekends," and "Milwaukee is known for making good beer, and thus students take advantage of the city." For those who prefer to stay on campus "in the evening, there is almost always something going on or to do with friends. To a program sponsored by the university or a campus organization or a pick-up game of Frisbee." But keep in mind the bright students at Marquette like to exercise their intellect with "discussions ranging from a variety of topics, from politics, religion, issues of social justice, or the economy classes." "Our men's basketball program is a pretty big deal on campus," and students are psyched about new head coach Buzz Williams and the team's three straight NCAA tournament appearances. Some students also participate in Greek life, "intramural sports, student organizations," and "the school's radio station."
Students Say - Student Body
The majority of Marquette students are "white, upper-middle" and "from the Chicago suburbs," but "it seems as if everyone fits in." Says another, "I haven't seen one single person not fit in; doesn't matter what race, gender, or sexual orientation, everyone hangs out with everyone." "The motto of Marquette is Curas Personalis, which means 'care for the whole person.' This is a saying by which our students live." One student says, "The typical student wears jeans, a Marquette T-shirt, and gym shoes." Sounds about right-school spirit definitely thrives here. Many student's cite the athletics as their favorite part of attending Marquette, and "everyone comes together to support our sports teams." Many others enjoy the school's Jesuit values and its focus on "emphasizing community service, and many are involved in making the city a better place." "Marquette lives up to its promise in promoting Jesuit values in and outside of the classroom."
