Students Say - Academics
Tuskegee University is a smaller, historically black college steeped in "pride, history," "heritage, and tradition." A required core curriculum in the liberal arts and sciences ensures a well-rounded education, but this place is primarily known for its excellence in the hard sciences and its "top-notch" engineering programs. Tuskegee produces more African American aerospace science engineers than any other school in the country. The chemical, electrical, and mechanical engineering programs are also notable. (Incidentally, some three-quarters of the African American veterinarians on the planet went here as well.) Students tell us that the academic atmosphere is "wonderful." "Class sizes are small," explains a senior, "only slightly larger than the average high school class at times." Opportunities for undergraduate research are definitely available. Professors are "always accessible" and "mostly good." Many are nothing less than "enlightening." Faculty members "are also very good mentors." They "break their necks to help students outside the class." In the past, the administration has not received the same reviews. Though some students have noted that Tuskegee is run "as smoothly as possible," other felt that the administrators were "hard to find." However, in 2008 a Vice President for Student Affairs was hired to recognize these issues. Additionally, a new online registration process has been implemented.

Students Say - Campus Life
Tuskegee is located in eastern Alabama, in an affordable but "boring" town "in the middle of nowhere." There are "very few distractions." "The students have a great sense of school spirit and unity," though, and they "make their own fun" on this "laid-back" campus. You can participate in more than 100 clubs and organizations. There are "all sorts of student activities, such as fashion shows, basketball tournaments, concerts," and game nights. "A lot of school clubs have movie nights and show really great movies," too. Tuskegee is home to "a great football team" that is "overwhelmingly supported." Don't leave your seat at halftime either, or you'll miss the Marching Crimson Pipers-"the Best Band in the Land." Percentage-wise, Greek life isn't huge, but fraternities and sororities are extremely visible. Frat parties are common. House parties are also abundant. Drugs and alcohol are "available, but if it's not your style then you don't have to take part." When students grow tired of the campus scene, the relatively bright lights of Montgomery aren't far, and Auburn "is right up the road, so you can always go mingle with the Auburn University students."

Students Say - Student Body
As an HBCU, Tuskegee's student population is composed almost completely of African Americans. The only obvious exception is the smattering of white students who are enrolled in the veterinary school. "The typical student at Tuskegee is outgoing" "and easy to get along with." Most are very diligent when it comes to academics. "There may be a few slackers," one student says. Some Tuskegee students tell us that "everyone has their own style" here. According to them, "you have the fraternity/sorority types, athletes," and all manner of other subgroups. Others beg to differ. They say that there isn't a lot of individuality. "Students at this university tend to dress the same." Either way, though, pretty much everyone agrees that "it's not hard to fit in unless you're just totally lame."
