The University emphasizes the growth of the individual student and strives to instill in students the desire to be agents of change in the world and to use knowledge for the benefit of others, as well as themselves.
University of the Cumberlands is a four-year, coed liberal arts college offering a broad curriculum with more than 46 programs of study from which to choose. The student body consists of 1,843 students representing 40 states and 30 countries. Most students live on campus in the University's eleven residence halls. A director assisted by student staff members supervises each hall.
Students benefit from such special services as the Career Services Center, Center for Leadership Studies, Academic Resource Center, and free tutorial assistance.
University of the Cumberlands is accredited by the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097: Telephone number 404-676-4501) to award the Bachelor of Science, the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Music, the Bachelor of General Studies, the Master of Arts in Education, and the Master of Arts in Teaching, the Master of Arts in Physician Assistant Studies, the Master of Arts in Professional Counseling, the Master of Business Administration, the Education Specialist, and the Doctor of Education degrees. The University's Teacher Education and Certification programs are also approved by the Kentucky State Department of Education.

Don't let the small size of our campus fool you. There are enough activities going on every day at UC to fill a dozen college careers. Whether your interest lies in athletics, creative expression, student government, academic enrichment, community service, spiritual development, or in any combination of these areas, you'll find an outlet here for your energy.
Many academic departments sponsor clubs and academic honor societies for students with a particular interest in the discipline, so be sure to visit the departments that interest you or contact a faculty member in that department for more information.
Each year, University of the Cumberlands hosts numerous guest performers and speakers and celebrates the talents of its students and faculty through a variety of lectures, concerts, art exhibitions, and theatrical productions. Many of these events are free of charge, and most are open to the public.
In addition, UC offers ten varsity sports for both men and women. Competing in the Mid-South Conference, UC is a member of the NAIA and is Division I.
The Student Government Association is dedicated to giving students a voice through elected representatives. In addition to promoting student concerns and working as a liaison between students and college administrators, the SGA provides a number of important services, and sponsors a number of student-centered events throughout the year.
School Says - Academics
University of the Cumberlands seeks to provide academic specialization within the broad framework of a liberal arts education. To supplement the in-depth knowledge acquired within each major, 37 semester hours of general studies from the areas of Christian faith and values, cultural and aesthetic values, the English language, humanities, leadership and community service, natural and mathematical sciences, physical education, and social sciences are required. Students must earn 128 semester hours to graduate with a bachelor's degree.
The academic year begins in late August, with the first semester ending in mid-December. The second semester runs from early January to early May. Two five-week undergraduate summer sessions and two four-week graduate summer sessions are also offered. Orientation, pre-registration, and academic advising by faculty members begin in the summer preceding entrance.
Students may receive credit for passing the College Board, the College-Level Examination Programs (CLEP), and special departmental tests. Highly qualified students have the opportunity to undertake advanced independent study.
School Says - Admissions
The purpose of the admission process is to identify applicants who are likely to succeed academically at University of the Cumberlands and at the same time contribute positively to the campus community. The process considers such factors as high school records (including courses taken, grade trends, and rank in class), scores on the American College Test (ACT), or on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), application essay (not required of all applicants), extracurricular activities and honors, and personal contact.

University of the Cumberlands is located in Williamsburg, Kentucky, which is in the southern part of the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. Williamsburg is about two hundred miles south of Cincinnati, about an equal distance from Louisville, about eighty miles north of Knoxville, and about 100 miles south of Lexington. The business section of the city lies in a small valley of the Cumberland River; the University and chief residence section are situated on the surrounding hills. It is a place of natural beauty and healthful surroundings.
Williamsburg is one of the older cities of the state. It has long been known for its larger number of beautiful residences, for its churches and schools, and for the hospitality of its people.
UC offers a picturesque campus with stately buildings and rolling green lawns nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian mountain range with the main campus situated on three hills which divide it into three distinct parts and afford a magnificent view of the surrounding area. The University's buildings, which are situated on these hills and a viaduct, spanning the south and middle hills, provide an easy and pleasant passageway to each part of the campus.
Within a few miles of campus are Laurel Lake, Cumberland Falls State Park, Cumberland Gap National Park, and the Daniel Boone National Forest.

For 2011-2012, the basic academic year expenses are $18,000 for tuition and fees and $6,826 for room and board. The average cost for books and supplies is approximately $1,000 per academic year.niversity of the Cumberlands sponsors a large financial aid program that coordinates money from federal, state, private, and University sources. Last year, 95 percent of UC students shared more than $27 million in aid. Academic and athletic scholarships are available.
