School Says - General Information
New York University is unlike any other institution of higher education in the world. When you enter NYU, you become part of a close-knit community that combines the nurturing atmosphere of a small- to medium-sized college with the myriad cultural offerings and research opportunities of a Global Network University. The energy and resources of New York City and Abu Dhabi serve as extensions of our campuses there, providing unique opportunities for research, internships, and job placement. On campus, NYU's intellectual climate is fostered by a faculty of world-famous scholars, researchers, and artists who teach both undergraduate and graduate courses. Students often work on individual projects with these outstanding professors. NYU students come from all 50 states and over 130 countries. They enroll in one of 11 undergraduate schools, colleges, or programs and choose from over 4,500 courses in over 230 majors.

School Says - Student Body
NYU is anything but cookie-cutter-that's one of the best things about being a part of a large, global network university. Its culture of openness, opportunity, and tolerance allows NYU's community to thrive. There are so many choices here about what to do that no two students make exactly the same selection. Some come together in groups; others go their own ways.

There are many ways to get involved at NYU-including approximately 400 clubs and organizations, a dynamic student government, a variety of sports teams, myriad community service opportunities, and much more. Students at NYU find their niche by doing what they love. You can determine your future as you contribute to University life, and learn to become a leader in the process!

With NCAA Division III, intramural, and club athletics, 400 student clubs, and numerous volunteer activities, NYU students participate in ways that match their interests.

Student-run clubs are as varied as the student body. Whether their interests lie in foreign languages, politics, ballroom dancing, writing for the Washington Square News or working at NYU's radio station, students will find something to suit their tastes.

Two gyms - Coles Sports and Recreation Center and the Palladium Athletic Facility - cater to intramurals, recreation classes, and 21 varsity teams. NYU is also partnered with Chelsea Piers, which includes facilities for golf, ice and rollerskating, indoor soccer, and sand volleyball.

Hundreds of students annually serve communities across the city, country and world through the Office of Student Activities' C-Team, Alternative Breaks Program, new student OutReach Program, fraternities and sororities, and student organizations. Students deliver meals to the needy and homebound, tutor children, paint public schools, clean up parks, rebuild areas devastated by natural disasters, and more.

School Says - Academics
At NYU, students enroll into one of the University's undergraduate schools, colleges, or programs. NYU Abu Dhabi, NYU's new honors college opening fall 2010 in the United Arab Emirates, blends a global academic opportunity with a liberal arts, science, and engineering curriculum. The College of Arts and Science offers an extensive curriculum in liberal arts and science, including pre-professional law, medicine, and dentistry programs. The Global Liberal Studies Program is a rigorous four-year course of study in the liberal arts, language proficiency, and international experience, including a junior-year abroad experience. The Liberal Studies Program is a two-year interdisciplinary liberal arts program for which enrollment is offered to select students; upon successful program completion, the students then enroll as juniors in the undergraduate school, college, or program to which they originally applied. The Leonard N. Stern School of Business ranks among the top 10 nationally, and combines a liberal arts core with an outstanding business curriculum. The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development focuses on the human service professions, including education, health, communications, and the arts. The Tisch School of the Arts combines a liberal arts education with conservatory training. The Gallatin School of Individualized Study allows highly motivated students to design their own curriculum. The Silver School of Social Work combines a liberal arts education with a firm grounding in social work. The Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism, and Sports Management offers programs in hotel and tourism management and sports management. The College of Nursing offers liberal arts combined with nursing science.

All students, regardless of major, receive a liberal arts foundation. NYU faculty are among the world's leading intellectuals, including scholars and researchers who have received Nobel, Crafoord, and Pulitzer Prizes; MacArthur, Guggenheim, and Fulbright Fellowships; and Oscar and Emmy Awards. Faculty members teach undergraduate and graduate courses, allowing undergraduate students to become directly involved in research projects with internationally known scholars.

School Says - Admissions
Undergraduate admission to NYU is highly selective. The process involves a comprehensive review of the applicant's academic background, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, an essay, personal statements, and recommendation letters. Several programs also require the applicant to audition or submit creative materials. Applicants who have successfully completed a broad range of challenging course work throughout high school are the most desirable candidates. Also considered are your unique talents, personal attributes, and future goals.

Applicants must submit official score reports for standardized tests, and may choose from one of the following options: SAT Reasoning Test and two SAT Subject Tests; ACT (with Writing Test); SAT Reasoning Test and two Advanced Placement (AP) Exam scores; three SAT Subject Test scores (one in literature or the humanities, one in math or science, and one nonlanguage of the student's choice); or three AP Exam scores (one in literature or the humanities, one in math or science, and one nonlanguage of the student's choice).

Students who demonstrate evidence of an extraordinary accomplishment outside of normal classroom or scholastic activity, such as a major publication in a national or international journal, a published book, a film or other outstanding visual or performing artistic accomplishment, a scientific or other remarkable discovery, winning a national competition, or the equivalent are required to provide only an SAT score, or two SAT Subject Test scores, or two AP Exam scores.

The admissions staff also visits high schools and hosts receptions nationwide. Check with your college counselor or the Admissions Web site at admissions.nyu.edu for dates and times.

School Says - Campus Life
At NYU, New York City is the integral backdrop to the undergraduate experience. NYU's Washington Square campus is located in the heart of Greenwich Village, a historic neighborhood and one of the city's most creative communities that has attracted generations of writers, musicians, artists, and intellectuals. Rather than building walls to separate the campus from the community, NYU embraces the city as an essential element of academic life. New York is a world center of finance, media, and art, offering internships, part-time jobs and research experiences that pair course work with practical experience. The city offers the best in theatre, dance, music, film, museums, and galleries. Undergraduates can be found presenting academic papers at annual conferences; winning prizes at film festivals; working on innovative research projects in laboratories; interning on Wall Street; and completing field work in some of the world's best hospitals and schools.

In addition, NYU's new Abu Dhabi campus puts students in the center of an entrepreneurial capital of ideas and talents. Abu Dhabi, a diverse city in the heart of the Middle East, has developed a progressive agenda in health care, the arts, economic and environmental sustainability, and educational human development. This creates an array of opportunities for students to pursue learning, research, and innovation.

School Says - Cost Aid
2009-2010 Costs*
Tuition and fees are $38,765; average room and board (includes up to 19 meals a week) is $13,226.

*Tisch School of the Arts and Stern School of Business rates vary.We believe that you should be able to choose a college that offers the best range of educational opportunities. To make this choice possible, we attempt to aid students in need of financial assistance.

There are many financial aid sources at NYU, and all students are invited to apply for financial aid or one of NYU's financing plans. Sixty-seven percent of full-time NYU undergraduates receive some form of financial aid.

Scholarships take into account both financial need and academic merit; however, while merit-based scholarships are available, NYU is committed to using the vast majority of its scholarship funds to assist students whose families are unable to pay the full cost of an NYU education. Low-interest education loans are available for both students and parents. Part-time employment, on and off campus, is another source of funding.

NYU also offers or participates in a variety of payment plans, ranging from interest-free prepayment plans to extensive loan programs that allow families to finance the cost of a college education over many years.

A financial aid package might include any combination of scholarships, loans, or work-study programs. Students wishing to be considered for aid must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA's submission deadline is February 15 for the fall semester and November 1 for the spring semester.

Location, location, location in "the most amazing city on earth," along with "great facilities" and "top-notch faculty," makes New York University an excellent choice for those seeking "an untraditional college experience" in "a paradise for the independent and motivated." With more than 20,000 students and 11 distinct schools offering more than 230 undergraduate degrees, NYU "is about diversity. Students are from all over the world; they come from different cultures, and they have different talents and interests. Similarly, NYU offers endless opportunities for students, no matter what their interests or ambitions are." The school offers voluminous opportunities to participate in research, pursue an internship, or begin a career in the arts (although "you have to be active and willing to find these opportunities"). Given the school's size, many students are "actually quite surprised by the accessibility of both the faculty and administration." Although "this is not the kind of school where students really get to know all of their teachers, as it is unlikely that a student will have a professor more than once," those who make the effort report that "It is so easy to meet with [professors] outside of class, and I still get e-mails from professors about internships, jobs, and scholarship recommendations." Many here also tout the "great study abroad programs."

Students Say - Campus Life
Living in New York City is the biggest part of going to school at New York University, NYU students agree. The school's New York City campus is located in the heart of Greenwich Village, one of the city's major nightlife destinations, so "there is always something to do at any hour of the day," usually within walking distance of the school. One student reports, "Every weekend there are tons of things to do, both at NYU and in New York City. NYU really takes advantage of its location, so a lot of the programming provided by residence life or the student resource center is engaging you in the city that has become your new home." Living in the Big Apple means that "On any given day you can go to a museum, concert, sporting event, or theater performance...and a lot of the times, NYU will foot the bill if you go to an event in the city with your RA or with a club." The location also provides plenty of internship opportunities, which is good because "The vast majority of students at NYU are interested in interning and finding jobs through that gateway." The school has no campus per se; it surrounds Washington Square Park, a busy public square where students love to relax when the weather is accommodating.

Students Say - Student Body
There is no typical student at NYU, where an undergraduate student body of more than 20,000 and a broad range of academic interests ensure a broad demographic. "Each school at NYU attracts a different group," students tell us. "The Tisch School of the Arts attracts a very out-there group of actors and the like," while the Stern Business School "has a massive population of Asians and Indians." "Hipsters are pretty pervasive throughout all schools except Stern," although "every school has people who break those stereotypes. [Even so,] few students can find ways to not fit in because of the huge number of students" at the university. Throughout NYU, "Students tend to be incredibly motivated and ambitious." Students insist that "it is also important to note that NYU students are very accepting of each other's differences," an important factor at a school that brings together "students of all different backgrounds, ethnicities, and gender identities and makes them coexist within the university."
