"If you are looking to acquire a "well rounded liberal arts education" at a "school that feels like home," consider Augustana College. "Small class size[s]" and "professorial personal attention" conspire to create an "intimate," "close-knit and communal environment." Not surprisingly, "friendly people" populate this "beautiful campus." That includes the professors, who "always seem to care about students inside and outside of the classroom." "The majority of the faculty have a PhD or highest degree available in their field," and most are "passionate for what they teach." Undergraduates report that for the most part professors are "student-oriented, as they are more encouraged to have excessive office hours than to publish." Of course, "like every school, you have good teachers and you have bad ones." As far as exceptional academic programs, students think Augustana "is a strong school in music and the sciences." In particular, "the pre-med programs are excellent." The latter strength owes in part to "excellent scientific equipment." Educational bonuses include an "excellent library and library staff." Students report that "the administration at Augustana is very accessible and willing to hear the requests of students." The college president even "welcomes students into his home during office hours." That, of course, is in keeping with the "more personalized education" that Augustana offers."
Students Say - Campus Life
""Augustana life is pretty party centered." And because the administration is so adamant about maintaining a "dry campus," the parties "are all off-campus in student rented houses." "The sororities and fraternities certainly kick up the party scene," though there are plenty of non-Greek parties happening on any given weekend. If option A is an off-campus party, option B is "a downtown bar scene that we call the District." There are also plenty of non-alcoholic entertainment options off-campus, like "a ton of activities (bowling, IMAX, zoo, etc.) and museums (Putnam, John Deere, Figge Art, etc.) that are within the Quad City areaâ¦. In addition, because the Mississippi River is so close, there are hiking and biking trials everywhere." To keep students on campus and wholesomely engaged, "the school tries to provide a lot of activities that are not drinking and party related like bringing concerts to campus, having Bingo and Texas Hold âEm, as well as comedians." These are generally pretty well received by students. There is also a "museum on campus" for art aficionados."
Students Say - Student Body
""The typical Augie student is an affluent, white, Chicago suburbanite." Most everyone else seems to be "from the Quad City area." "Everyone participates in some activity on campus, whether it's in music, theater, athletics, fraternity/sorority life, religious groups, etc." As a Lutheran school, it's no surprise that most students here identify as Christians. Those are the common attributes. To be blunt, "there is not a lot of diversity" here, even though the school is "really trying to make Augustana more diverse." "A very small percentage of students are from abroad or other states besides Iowa and Illinois." "Personality types [are] really where diversity occurs. Students are passionate about many different things and are very supportive of each other's interests and aspirations.""
