"Tucked away in Wilson, North Carolina, Barton College is a "small, friendly, personal school" where students feel they "belong more to a family than to a campus." Many students come to Barton for its excellent School of Nursing and School of Education, including one of the only programs in deaf education in the country. No matter what your educational goals, students appreciate the fact that "the faculty and staff try to ensure that all students graduate with the degree that they want." A freshman attests, "One of the greatest strengths of my school is that there is a desire for student success, and there are many offices and individuals that are willing to sacrifice time and energy to make dreams and goals possible." At Barton, "Most teachers have an obvious desire to be there teaching" and students describe their professors as "informed, resourceful people, interested in a student's future and mostly willing to go out of their way to help and participate in the student's life." When it comes to the administration and staff, most are similarly engaged with the student body. For example, a sophomore tells us that the school's chaplain "drove me to the airport when I had to fly home to attend my grandmother's funeral, and she takes a genuine interest in the lives of the students.""
Students Say - Campus Life
"There are plenty of clubs, activities, and social opportunities at Barton College, of which sports and fraternity parties are among the most popular. In addition to these perennial college favorites, the Campus Activities Board brings "bands, illusionists, and comedians" to the school on the weekends---though some say there is room for improvement in the school's recreational offerings. When they want to get away, students can sign up for "off-campus trips, such as going to the beach or to the NC State Fair." The surrounding city of Wilson "provides the basic essentials for a college city," though students lament the fact that it "lacks that particular flair and uniqueness that sets a city like ours apart from others." Therefore, "Many people go home on the weekends most of the time, so the campus is pretty quiet." It's also not uncommon for students set off to nearby "Greenville or Raleigh for entertainment.""
Students Say - Student Body
"Some students chose Barton for its affiliation with the Church of the Disciples of Christ, though most admit that the college maintains a light focus on religion, and nonreligious students also feel at home in the community. There is a bit of ethnic and cultural diversity at the school, as well as an international population; however, most Barton undergrads could simply be described as typical "young college students, fresh out of high school, motivated to learn and pursue a degree." Many students are on a sports team (Barton is the home of the 2007 NCAA Division II Mens Basketball Champions) or in a Greek organization and, on the whole, students say that "like-minded people find their clique" at Barton. However, there are no iron-clad social groups. A sophomore reassures, "I'm not involved in sports or a sorority here, but I tend to get along with everyone, so I generally fit in" most situations."
