The Drury University undergraduate program "is very focused on global studies." In fact, GP21, the school's "required global studies minor," ensures that all students leave here "better rounded" through "exposure to other cultures." A "terrific study-abroad" program also contributes to this objective; nearly half of all undergraduates spend time studying or serving in other countries. It's all part of an "innovative and academically ambitious" curriculum emanating from a "forward-thinking mindset." Students report that the Drury approach to education "encourages students to think outside the box and to bring their life experiences into the educational environment." Standout disciplines here include a "fully accredited architecture program," a "good premedical program," and strong offerings in education, music therapy, communications, and business. With just 1,600 undergrads, Drury is small enough that "you usually know everyone's name in your class, and the professor has a direct relationship with each of his or her students." Drury students also have many opportunities to collaborate on research with professors, to present papers, and to publish in professional journals."
Students Say - Campus Life
There is always something going on at Drury that you can participate in, because "it seems like there's always something going on on-campus whether it's a sport or an art gallery opening." Approximately 30 percent of students participate in Greek life within Drury's eight sororities and fraternities, and of course "there are parties at the fraternity quad, but if partying isn't your thing, Drury makes sure that there are other activities to take part in." These include more than 70 student organizations, movie nights in the dormitories, and the Student Union Board's "completely free, always rewarding events that happen all around the campus. Many of said events take place each week. Usually, there is food involved, so these are always popular." Hometown Springfield also "offers a lot to do for fun," including "movies, the mall," "rock climbing, concerts, and clubs." The city has a "fairly developed" music scene, "so a lot of people choose to go to the shows downtown." Also, "In the downtown area on the first Friday of each month, the shops, cafes, and galleries remain open until 9 or later (this is called the Artwalk). It's a very enjoyable way to spend the evening."
Students Say - Student Body
Your typical Drury undergrad "is from a fairly well-off family, most likely white and middle-class" and "from Missouri, although out-of-state and international students are by no means uncommon." "We are not incredibly diverse with regards to U.S. minorities," students concede, but "there are people from 50+ nations that attend here." The student body is "also diverse socially and politically." Jocks and Greeks each form significant pluralities but not a majority. One student explains: "Our athletics are important, but not so much so that the average person is a jock of some type, and the same goes for Greeks. They are a large percentage, but not large enough to constitute the norm." There is also "a strong Christian movement on our campus."
