Professors Get Low Marks
Brimming with sincere Husky pride, students at the University of Connecticut eagerly dole out praise for their school's fabulous athletic programs, world-class academics, friendly atmosphere, and remarkable affordability. At this large research university, professors are "extremely in-tune with recent developments in their fields," and "research opportunities are outstanding," even on the undergraduate level. A political science major shares, "My professors are the ones invited to the White House to discuss the Middle East crisis, flying across the world to solve issues of border disputes, and more. The professors bring their life experiences to the classroom, and it brings the material to life." While most professors maintain their professional pursuits outside the classroom, teaching is taken seriously at UConn, and instructors and administrators "genuinely care and want you to succeed." By all accounts, faculty is easily accessible during office hours, and, "if you can't make those, they'll work out a different time for you." Like professors, UConn's leadership is surprising friendly, down-to-earth, and accessible. Well loved by all, "President Hogan rides the student bus to the football games, is always seen around campus, and even keeps a blog letting students know what he is up to." Even so, students remind us that UConn is a big school, and students must take responsibility for their own educations. A senior explains, "UConn doesn't spoon-feed you education. Students do have to take the initiative to communicate with professors and the other resources on campus." "You have to put into it what you want to get out."
Students Say - Campus Life
UConn's "vibrant school spirit" is one of the university's most distinctive qualities, and Huskies are enthusiastically involved in the campus community. Most UConn undergraduates are "in a million clubs, do community service, play sports, or simply have Husky pride and attend UConn events." Socially and academically, you'll find a mix: "Some students are all about academics, and they live in Babbidge Library, others are all about partying and can be found at the off-campus apartments or the bar throughout the week." In general, most students strike a balance between work and play. A sophomore elaborates, "From Sunday to Thursday, almost all students work diligently. Thursday nights bring some partying, followed by mass amounts of parties on Friday and Saturday nights." If you aren't interested in parties, there are plenty other options, "from athletics, to musical and theatrical performances, to events in the Student Union, UConn has so many different things to do!" In addition, there are more than "350 clubs and organizations," as well as an active intramural sports league, which is a great way to blow off steam. No summary of life at UConn would be complete without mentioning the competitive Division I athletics, which are the "heart of campus spirit." In their free time, UConn students (along with faculty and alumni) "love to go cheer on our nationally ranked UConn Huskies." In fact, student tickets for sporting events sell out months in advance.
Students Say - Student Body
Considering the school's attractive in-state tuition, it's no surprise that 80 percent of UConn undergraduates come from Connecticut. While that fact may diminish the demographic diversity on campus, students reassure us that "there's a great mix at UConn. With more than 16,000 students enrolled, you're bound to run into just about every type of person." Students say you'll see a lot of students wearing North Face jackets and Ugg boots, but you'll also find an "animal science club, in which the students walk around with squirrel tails on." While UConn students exhibit varying degrees of academic seriousness, "the majority care about their grades, and the library is always packed during exams, midterms, and finals." More than anything else, "the real tie [among] students is the pride that we all have in our university." A senior insists, "I have not met one person who is unhappy and dislikes the university."
