"With fewer than 4,000 undergraduates, Butler University is small enough that "everyone gets to know each other and professors value you as a person,"" yet large enough to excel in an impressive array of disciplines. The pharmacy program is Butler's top attraction, but students also laud the university's offerings in dance, theatre, chemistry, and communications studies. The popular College of Business "is really big on internships and getting you ready to be in the real world."" This emphasis on experiential learning pervades the entire university: "Butler University is about academic experience, with an emphasis on experience,"" one religious studies/international studies majors tells us. Butler's size creates "a comfortable place in which to attend classes and socialize with others while providing tons of opportunities for involvement."" Some feel it's a bit too comfortable; one opines that ""Butler is about upper-middle class suburban kids from the Midwest not stepping out of their comfort zones or diversifying."" All agree that the cozy size allows for "networking while gaining a high-quality education."" In some areas Butler is ""academically challenging beyond belief,"" but in others ""it is possible to slide by with an okay education."""
Students Say - Campus Life
""Greek life is very popular"" at Butler, where it seems to some that "most on-campus activities are put on by a fraternity or sorority." However, "the [non-Greek] weekend activities are being advertised more and there are more of them than in the past."" Off campus, Butler students enjoy plenty of entertainment options with "Broad Ripple ten minutes to the north of us and Indianapolis ten minutes to the south."" Indy, students tell us, ""is a great city. Anything you would want is at your fingertips,"" including great dining and clubs, great shopping, great sports, and "an amazing art museum."" When it comes to college athletics, undergrads "are obsessed with our Butler basketball team (which is understandable considering it is our only good athletic team)."""
Students Say - Student Body
"Butler students are ""fairly homogenous" with most describing themselves as "middle- to upper-class white students, very active, outgoing, and academically conscientious. Students who don't fit this category form their own cliques or join a club where they do feel welcome, but I think it's more that they segregate themselves. I don't see much discrimination or prejudice on campusâ€"just cliques."" There are a lot of "typical preps"" who help populate the Greek scene and who believe that "if you are not in Greek life, you are considered a social outcast."" Students report that "there has been a large push in recruiting more diverse students"" in recent years, so that "there are now a lot more people of Asian, Indian, and African-American background."" Undergrads also point out that ""because of Butler's strong dance program, there tends to be a stronger lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender population than other campuses might have."""
