Students Say - Student BodyAt Mills College, students hail from "very diverse cultural and class backgrounds, age ranges from 17 to 94, and life experiences from Cairo to Compton." It might seem like a "culture shock for some at first, but the atmosphere is one of acceptance and personal growth." Mills students describe their classmates as studious, serious, quirky, diverse, and atypical, and many mention that Mills has "a large population of lesbian, queer, bisexual, gender-curious, and transgender students." Acceptance is the rule. As one senior testifies, "I have yet to see any kind of prejudice or intolerance of another person's beliefs. Everyone is polite and courteous when faced with another's points of view." A freshman gushes, "Mills is the most vibrant and diverse community that I have ever been a part of, and from what I can tell, everybody that chooses to be at Mills, fits in at Mills." Reflecting the prevailing perspective in the San Francisco Bay Area, "the student body as a whole is very liberal, socially and politically." In fact, social awareness and political activism is practically a prerequisite among the student population, which principally consists of "environmentally aware, intelligent women who enjoy learning and making a difference."
