"Smallish Seattle Pacific University offers "solid Christian education in an urban environment." This is a school dedicated "to the word of God and to the person of Jesus Christ" and several courses related to Christianity are included among the general education requirements. Beyond the core curriculum, SPU offers more than 50 majors. "The nursing program is very good." Business, engineering, and, of course, theology are also solid. Students generally praise for the faculty. "They truly care about the students and make every effort to be available," relates an accounting major. "What has amazed me about SPU is that, as a freshman, I was able to walk straight into my professor's office and talk for almost an hour," adds an English major. "Not every professor is good," though. Some "seem to babble" and "can't teach." Administratively, "the school appears to run well." You'll see the top brass "showing their faces all over campus" and most staff members "do a great job of reaching out to the students.""
Students Say - Campus Life
"SPU offers an unquestionably Christian environment. "Dorm life is pretty strict." "The consumption of alcohol is prohibited." There is "no coed mingling after certain hours" and premarital sex is taboo. "There is the underground party life" but "there are no parties on campus." "If you are a conservative Christian and very religious then this is the perfect, supportive environment for you," explains a senior. "If you are like any other normal college student who is looking for freedom and independence and the chance to try drinking and partying then this is definitely not the place to attend." Mostly, "there's lots of good old clean, wholesome fun going on." Intramural sports and Frisbee are popular. "People are very prone to discussions about faith" as well. "At almost anytime, there is a Bible study of sorts going on somewhere." SPU's campus is located at the bottom of Queen Anne Hill in "a classy old neighborhood with a row of coffee shops, restaurants, and boutiques." "Queen Anne is hardly downtown" but "the heart of Seattle" isn't far and public transportation is reliable. The Emerald City can be "very expensive" but it offers "endless opportunities for fun.""
Students Say - Student Body
"SPU is a "very female campus." One student says it sometimes feels like "Seattle Girls' College." Students here are "friendly," "very spiritual," and "very concerned with coming off as genuine." They "love God and are involved in missions and volunteer work." "They all seem to want to get married," too. Many students are "from suburbia" and "obviously wealthy." Some are "sugar-sweet nice" but "somewhat sheltered and naïve." Though "there's not a lot of racial diversity," some students insist that everyone is "incredibly different." There is "quite the population of modern-day hippies," they say, and "a funky sense of style" throughout the student body. Other students disagree. "SPU is not very diverse and it seems like if a person is atypical, then they are somewhat of an outcast," says a first-year student. Certainly, it's "isolating if you are not Christian" here."
