Students Say - Academics
Hampton University, "one of the premier historically black colleges and universities in the country," is "perfect for students who desire to be around other intelligent and focused black students who have a future and are making plans to achieve their goals. Our students are making changes in this world and will always continue to." With popular programs in business and management, psychology, pharmacy, nursing, sociology, the hard sciences, and communications, Hampton "is about producing successful, bright, and talented professionals." The school has made a special commitment to journalism and communications, opening a state-of-the-art facility a few years back that includes a full working studio with editing facilities, a student-run radio station, and five computer labs. Throughout its many departments, Hampton stresses the importance of experiential learning, "presenting a host of opportunities for students to get internships and jobs." One student reports, "I have had three internships and have been on the campus radio station for my entire career at HU." Professors here earn good marks for dedication and teaching skills; "the administration tries," and "overall, they care," but students say some are "not very punctual" and can "act uppity." Most agree the inconvenience is worth it for "the connections and networking" Hampton provides. As one student notes, "everyone here is important, related to, or knows someone important, and everyone will become successful and important."

Students Say - Campus Life
Hampton is not the typical party school, students agree. One student writes, "life at Hampton is pretty boring compared to where I'm from." Undergrads report that "most events take place off campus, so you really have to find your own fun." Fortunately the area provides some diversion, including "malls, fine dining, and parties...Also, Hampton is surrounded by cities that are no more than 15 to 20 minutes away," including Norfolk, Newport News, and Virginia Beach. "Nearby amusement parks are also great attractions for the spring and summer." On campus, "there is a really nice student center that turns into a virtual party every day from noon to 2:00 P.M. The student center is tri-level and has everything from a theater to [a] bowling alley and a fitness center." Hampton's Greek system is very popular; the most popular ones "are highly competitive and selective, and the whole process is crazy and oh-so-hard to get into." Some here complain that restrictive regulations dampen campus life. One student writes, Students are not allowed to have refrigerators apparently due to outdated wiring in the dorms...Administration, faculty, and staff do not respect students as adults."

Students Say - Student Body
Hampton "is a historically black [college and] university, but the range of black students here is amazing. There is a niche for everyone, and I mean everyone, and most are universally accepted." Many are "very outgoing and professional," and "are well off and come from a nice home." Some "tend to be very materialistic and...care a lot about social matters. They all dress well, spend plenty of money on clothes, and drive very nice cars (even better cars than teachers)," but "there are many different types of students." Atypical students here "mesh well with the others," because Hampton students are a part of a family. "We are called Hamptonians, symbolizing our unity. Here we have a bond that is very strong- we all fit in-and it is not to be broken."
