Faulkner University-named after a longtime supporter of the school, incidentally, not the Nobel Prize-winning author-is "a private Christian University where you really get to know everyone and your teachers actually know your name." "The campus is beautiful, and the classes are small and personal." The "easily approachable" faculty is full of "very caring" "down-to-earth" and generally "fantastic" professors who are "available for outside help." Faulkner boasts nearly 50 fields of study. Business and pre-law studies are among the more popular ones. Some 30 percent of all students participate in study-abroad programs. There's an honors college in which students engross themselves in classical literature-from Homer to Shakespeare to Nietzsche. There's also a strong commitment to Christianity here and a decided focus "on helping its students grow closer to God." Several "classes on the Bible" are required in order to graduate.
Students Say - Campus Life
Faulkner has satellite campuses in Birmingham, Huntsville, and Mobile, but the main campus is in Montgomery. Some students call Alabama's capital "a boring town with absolutely nothing to do." Others like the place and point out that there's a mall and "tons of restaurants" nearby. On campus, some dorm rooms are "in bad shape," but the atmosphere is "very welcoming." It's "sort of an oasis for Christian college students." "The Faulkner bubble" is a phrase we hear bandied about pretty often. There are "plenty of activities," and "students here are involved." Social life is "centered around" social clubs, which are basically localized fraternities and sororities. "Spiritual life" is also abundant. College ministries offer "a lot of areas of service." Athletic and recreational facilities are new and nice, too, and school spirit is strong. "Christian beliefs, morals, and standards" are a big deal here, too. There are "a lot of rules." There's a curfew if you aren't yet 20, just for example. There's a dress code. Alcohol, tobacco, and drugs are verboten, as are "profanity" and "sexual immorality." And there's required chapel for full-time students every day except Friday so students can "get refreshed in Jesus."
Students Say - Student Body
The majority of the students are from the Southern states, with that Southern drawl. "Athletes who are here on scholarship" are very common. There is "a fairly large African-American population," and there is a solid contingent of nontraditional students as well. Otherwise, "the typical student here is a very good Christian" and "a very gregarious, outgoing person who loves the Lord." That student also has "a good haircut" and is probably "conservative" when it comes to matters of politics and religion. Most everyone seems to agree that it's easy to be atypical and still "thrive" here. However, some students tell us that you will feel like an outsider if you "do not fit the stereotype."
