Class Discussions Encouraged
Students Say - AcademicsClass Discussions Encouraged
Nestled in beautiful Greensboro, North Carolina, Guilford College is a school that places an "emphasis on community." Indeed, as one junior gushes, "When I visited, everyone stopped what they were doing and welcomed me to [the] college. It was such a different atmosphere than anywhere I had ever seen, and I immediately wanted to be a part of it." This convivial environment can likely be attributed to the school's Quaker roots and value system, which continue to permeate the campus. Most importantly, the warmth and openness extends into the classroom. As another junior raves, "The professors here are incredible. We all go on a first-name basis (Quakers love equality), and they go out of their way to make sure everyone is getting the material." Slackers beware! An English major warns, "We are extremely writing intensive; I've done more writing for an intro physics course than I've done for some English courses." Fortunately, the "teachers are available to offer advice and make sure we succeed." Student approval also extends to the college's administration. As one impressed psych major tells us, "The administration works very hard to address all of the school's issues. They even sit and have discussions with students about how they feel things need to be changed and what it is they see as needing to be done for the overall well-being of the school and students."
Students Say - Campus Life
Though most Guilford undergrads "spend the daytime doing homework," there are plenty of opportunities for students to kick back and take a breather from academics. On this socially conscious campus, many students "join clubs like Pride and Blacks Unifying Society, or participate in politics/community service." One sophomore concurs, adding that "Everywhere you walk you will find some sort of flyer posted about speakers coming to talk and share their beliefs or meetings that students have put together to discuss issues on campus. People love sharing their thoughts about what they want done." Many also praise the efforts of the Campus Activities Board which sponsors a number of "dances, movies, game nights, and biggest of all Serendipity [an annual music festival]." Considering Guilford's "beautiful" setting, it's no wonder that most undergrads also "love to be outside." As one English major shares, "We try to get off campus [during] the weekend with day trips like hiking, apple picking, swimming, etc." The campus is surrounded by a "ton of woods" and "Most people like to be out there when they can. People camp out for weeks and hike in for classes." Though there are "no fraternities or sororities," there's a "goofy party scene-lots of bonfires in the woods, lots of themed parties (i.e., '80s Aerobics)" which, as one junior assures us, "EVERYONE is welcome to attend."
Students Say - Student Body
A number of undergrads are quick to assert that "It's hard to describe the typical Guildford student." As one sophomore brags, "I have met and befriended people from many social classes, sexual orientations, religious and spiritual beliefs, interests and backgrounds." That being said, "Most students have liberal tendencies and the conservatives are definitely in the minority." Indeed, "Guilford seems to breed a second hippie generation." A French major explains, "I think the typical student is very carefree and laid-back and they care a lot about sustainability, local produce, and issues like that." Students do warn that "There is a great divide between the athletes and the [rest of the] student body." However, a junior assures us that "There really is a place for any kind of person to fit in." As one English explains, "We are all a little odd [so] we fit in together just fine." "If a kid is sitting alone or is just walking by him/herself someone will talk to them, join them, befriend them. No matter what, Guilford College students take care of one another."
