School Says - General Information
A leading public institution, Rowan University combines liberal education with professional preparation from the baccalaureate through the doctorate. Rowan provides a collaborative, learning-centered environment in which highly qualified and diverse faculty, staff, and students integrate teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, and community service. Through intellectual, social and cultural contributions, the University enriches the lives of those in the campus community and surrounding region.

From its founding in 1923 as a school for teachers, to its current status as a top-rated regional institution, Rowan University has had a remarkable history. Such landmark events as the 1967 Summit Conference between President Lyndon Johnson and Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin at Hollybush and the $100 million gift from Henry and Betty Rowan in 1992 truly put Rowan on the map as a place where current and future leaders and professionals thrive.

The University maintains two New Jersey campuses: a 200-acre suburban residential setting in Glassboro and a five-story urban facility in the University District of Camden.

The tree-lined Glassboro campus houses student residence halls, apartments and townhouses, a new education building, a new science center, a student recreation center, theatres, galleries, a planetarium, and 63 computer labs and 120 TEC classrooms throughout the main campus and the Camden campus.

The University is in the midst of a $530 million plan to expand the campus and further upgrade facilities, and intends to create a West Campus on 600 acres it recently purchased nearby. The anchor of the new tract will be the South Jersey Technology Park at Rowan University, which will play a significant role in the economic development of the region.

Additionally, Rowan University and the town of Glassboro have partnered to create Rowan Boulevard, a roadway being constructed at the East end of campus to the historic downtown. The plans call for the construction of a mixed-use corridor lined with shops and restaurants on the street level, topped by apartments and offices. Key anchors to the project are an apartment complex for Rowan University students (opened in 2009), a Barnes & Noble college superstore (opening in 2010) and a Holiday Inn Express Hotel (opening in 2010).

School Says - Student Body
The University enrolls over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students who represent the Mid-Atlantic States and 30 foreign countries. More than 100 clubs and organizations offer students professional, cultural and service activities. Students and faculty regularly win national recognition, usually competing with larger universities. Rowan University graduates are in demand. A total of 95 percent of the most recent graduating class was employed or attending graduate school within one year of graduation.

Rowan has one of the strongest NCAA Division III athletics programs in the nation, earning 11 national championships in five different sports. The Student Recreation Center is one of the most popular destinations on campus. It houses fitness equipment, hosts exercise classes, and is a hub for the large and popular intramural sports program.

Rowan faculty are actively engaged in research, scholarly, and creative activities, all of which contribute to the quality of instruction of students inside and out of classrooms. A high priority is placed on including students as collaborators with faculty on research. The University's goal is to integrate research and scholarship with teaching to enhance learning opportunities within the Rowan academic community. Rowan promotes research and scholarly activity through advocacy, information distribution, and collaboration with all members of the University community.

Rowan University's International Center offers 200 Study Abroad programs in over 50 countries. Students in all majors are eligible and all financial aid and credits earned abroad count toward a Rowan degree.

School Says - Academics
Students have access to the resources of a large university without sacrificing the personal attention and small class size of a college. All classes are taught by professors, not teaching assistants. The average class size is 21 students and the student/faculty ratio is 15 to 1.

The University offers 81 undergraduate majors among six academic colleges (Business, Communication, Education, Engineering, Fine and Performing Arts, and Liberal Arts and Sciences). In addition, the College of Professional and Continuing Education provides online and accelerated graduate programs as well as off-campus and Saturday degree completion programs for individuals with busy schedules seeking to advance their professional careers.

Graduate students can choose from seven teacher certification programs, 30 master's degrees and specializations, 19 graduate certification programs and a doctoral program in educational leadership.

Rowan University is listed in the "Top Tier" of Northern Regional Universities by U.S. News and World Report. The Princeton Review included Rowan in the latest edition of "The Best Northeastern Colleges" and the guidebook "The Best 366 Colleges." Rowan was selected for the Colleges of Distinction and was named one of "America's 100 Best College Buys" by Institutional Research and Evaluation, Inc. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognized Rowan as the 2008-2009 Individual Conference Champion for purchasing more green power than any other school in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

Students entering the University in 2009 had an SAT mid-range of 1,090 to 1,260 and were ranked in the top 21% of their high school class. Students interested in applying to the College of Fine and Performing Arts must arrange a music audition, theater audition or portfolio review.

School Says - Campus Life
The main campus of Rowan University is nestled in the historic New Jersey town of Glassboro. Known for its rich heritage in glass manufacturing, Glassboro is home to approximately 20,000 permanent residents.

There are lots of great things about South Jersey, but one of the best is its access to major metropolitan areas. Whether you're on our residential campus in Glassboro or at our facility in the University District of Camden, youÂ're within minutes of Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love and at most two hours from New York City and Baltimore.

Our location affords great opportunities for jobs and internships in areas ranging from business and technology, to law and politics, to arts, culture and the media.

Shop tax-free in Delaware, only 30 minutes away to the south, or stroll the boardwalk in Atlantic City, just an hour from campus.

Glassboro features a multitude of restaurants and entertainment options, all of which are within walking distance from campus.

Students Say - Academics
A New Jersey state school just southeast of Philadelphia, Rowan University is "dedicated to offering students a high quality education at an affordable price" as well as "a prodigious college experience through its many social, cultural and recreational organizations, events and activities." The school is perhaps best known for its "amazing education program that prepares future teachers in the best way possible," but students here tell us that offerings in engineering, music, business, history, and radio/television/film also shine. Rowan's science departments recently received an upgrade with "newer facilities" that are "very modern and have great equipment." Professors here receive good marks overall, although students warn that there is "too much variation in the quality of a course depending on the professor." "You could end up with great professors who are also tough, but you could also end up with professors whose courses aren't very challenging at all," explains a student. "For me, though, I have found the workload quite sizable and tough at times."

Students Say - Campus Life
Campus life during the week tends to be pretty quiet at Rowan, though most students are active within many of the campus' popular clubs and organizations. Others partake in bowling, shopping, laid back parties, and 50-cent movies (typically "the ones that came out of theaters but have not been released on DVD yet"). There are "plenty of parties to be found on weekends"-but be warned as the weekend starts on "Thursday night, and nearly everyone goes out." Things calm down a bit on Fridays and Saturdays when some students "go home to their families," but those who remain behind "usually end up having a lot of fun." Although drinking is popular, "Most people don't pressure other people into drinking," and nonalcoholic events are available. As one student explains, "There are a lot of options in terms of on-campus jobs, clubs, sports, and other organizations. If Rowan doesn't offer something you're interested in, you can get a few friends and start it on your own!" Many students choose to seek entertainment in nearby Philadelphia; the city is accessible by bus.

Students Say - Student Body
The Rowan student body is "ethnically diverse but the majority are Caucasian and familiar with the region of south Jersey." Students are described as "very down-to-earth," "normal," and "average to high-middle class kids just trying to get an education." Many "get involved in several things on campus...have at least one job on-campus or are members of at least one club or organization." "Anyone can find a place to fit in at Rowan University because of the wide variety of students, events and organizations Rowan University offers." Some students "keep to themselves...[but] overall, students are very friendly and mannered. It's a more mature level of interaction," explains an undergrad.
