"John Carroll, ""a quiet suburban university that allows students who are committed to their studies to thrive and learn,"" is ""a Jesuit institution small enough to feel like home"" while still graduating "the 'whole person,'"" a term Jesuits use to warn prospective students that they won't escape without a broad liberal arts education. To that end, JCU's core curriculum ""is pretty extensive,"" a fact many students appreciate; writes one, ""For someone who didn't know what to do with her life, it offered me an opportunity to explore what areas of study I wanted to pursue."" JCU has long been known for its rigorous pre-medical science programs; students report that the Boler School of Business ""is [also] a major highlight of JCU"" and that ""the business school is just asâ¦challenging as the science majors."" Communications studies are also reportedly strong, and undergrads note that JCU is ""a liberal arts school that has an excellent liberal tradition when it comes to other programs."" Students here appreciate how ""The university puts a huge emphasis on really diving into one's field of study. It's a very hands-on type of school. Forget waiting to graduate to get out in the work field. You could be doing that as a junior."" Access to a large urban area (Cleveland is about 20 minutes away by car) helps greatly in this regard."
Students Say - Campus Life
"Students at JCU ""are very focused and school-oriented but know how to relax and want to do so in the right way."" They enjoy ""tons of things to do around the Cleveland area. Lots of kids like taking the RTA down to see Cavs and Indians games,"" while ""other kids take advantage of the theater district downtown or go out with their friends to dinner and to shop."" Coventry Village, a nearby shopping, dining, and bar district, is a popular destination. Most students "go out on the weekends, whether it involves partying or not," and drinking is "pretty big." ""There is also a good amount of involvement in service-oriented programs and activities"" and ""intramural sports are a very popular release."""
Students Say - Student Body
"Carroll undergrads are typically ""extremely outgoing"" and ""passionate. No matter what side of politics or religion someone is on, they are passionate about it. In my opinion, passion means nothing without compassion. Many students here are actively engaged in service and helping others."" Nearly everyone is ""white, Catholic,"" and ""very affluent"" with ""no problem showing his/her monetary status."" The term ""preppy"" comes up often in students' description of each other, although they typically add that those who don't meet that description ""fit in well."" While ""the majority of students hail from Ohio,"" the school also has ""some international students,"" who find a ""welcoming"" environment here."
