Marywood University is a small Catholic university that offers a wide range of undergraduate majors and pre-professional programs, from art therapy and music performance to physician assistant and interior design. Marywood University consists of four colleges and a School of Architecture. No matter what you choose to study, the intimate classroom environment is the strength of a Marywood education. A freshman explains, "Through class discussions, I feel that I am truly learning and absorbing the material, as opposed to other schools where teachers dictate or lecture for hours." Academic programs are "challenging but not overwhelming," and "the professors do everything in their power to help their students learn and be able to apply that knowledge to real life." At the same time, personal accountability is vital. Teachers know you by name, and "small class sizes get you extra attention but also make it obvious if you skip class." If you are looking to take a wide range of classes, Marywood is not the best option, as most majors have extensive course requirements, and it can be difficult to get a spot in classes outside your declared department. On the other hand, "Marywood is awesome if you know exactly what you want to do. It has some excellent programs and combines them with general humanities classes."
Students Say - Campus Life
When they aren't in the library, Marywood students enjoy college life through "on-campus events, movies, bowling, house parties, and just hanging out in the lounges." School spirit surges during the school's sporting events, and "students get excited about the basketball games as well as the women's soccer games." Even though Marywood is a dry campus, you can always take "a trip down to Scranton University for party life (if that's what you're into)." When it comes to the surrounding city, "a lot of people complain that there is nothing to do around Scranton, but you just have to know where to look." In fact, "there is a lot of good shopping, movie theaters, restaurants, bars and clubs" in Scranton, and some nightclubs permit entry to age 18 and up. If you are willing to take a trip outside the city, "the spring and fall are a great time to go on hikes or enjoy the outdoor attractions" and, in the winter, "there is a ski resort close by."
Students Say - Student Body
Well-rounded, friendly, and studious, the typical Marywood undergraduate "does well in class, works out at the gym, is involved with clubs, and is surrounded by many friends." Most undergraduates at Marywood are "young, white, middle-class" students from New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, though the campus also attracts "students from all over the world, all different religions." Within the college community, you'll find "art lovers in our art field and sport lovers in our new gym, movie watchers in the Madonna Hall Movie Theater and dancers in our new dance studio. There are sorority girls always looking to add new girls to the Zeta Phi Delta and coffee drinkers at the many coffee spots on campus." Fortunately, all students "fit in as one big friendly community." A freshman shares, "Life at college is very safe and relaxing. People are free to make their own choices and [are] encouraged to have their own opinions."
