Students Say - AcademicsStudents Study the Least
Monmouth University is "not a large university, but not a tiny one," the sort of place where you "can hang out with friends one day and meet a whole new crowd the next." It's big enough to qualify as "a diverse school with good academics, recognized extracurriculars, and impressive athletics," yet small enough that "students really get to build great academic relationships with their professors and get the attention and education that they need and deserve." Standout departments include communications, business (where most of the professors "have worked for companies prior to teaching so they have a lot of insight"), education, music, criminal justice, and premedical sciences. In all disciplines students must complete "an internship program-what we call the experiential education requirement-that really sets up students for life after college. Many of the students get hired by the people for whom they intern." If there's a drawback here, it's that the student body carries too much dead weight, such as students who "have no interest" in anything but the near- by beach and thus threaten to transform the school into "a post-high school country club." However, "for a student willing to commit himself, Monmouth is a great school. At the same time, it is easy for a student to get by doing marginal work. Basically, you get out of it what you put into it."
Students Say - Campus Life
Life at Monmouth University "is a totally unique experience for each person. Some people go home every weekend and hate it; others choose to get involved and love it. Personally, I chose the latter choice and couldn't be happier about it." One student reports, "when I'm not endlessly slaving away over my senior thesis, you can find me (or any student my age, really) spending time on the beach, shopping, enjoying my wonderful apartment in Pier Village, or frequenting any one of the local bars." The party scene is not what it once was here; one student reports that "Monmouth somehow still has the reputation as a 'party school,' which was true around 10 years ago, but not anymore." Students warn, "The MU police are extremely strict about alcohol consumption. Most parties on campus are busted by RAs or the police." As a result, "off-campus parties are popular. Not a lot of people go home on the weekends, but a good number go to different schools around here." Alternatively, "there is lots of nightlife around the area: Long Branch, Seaside Park, Sayreville, Red Bank, Belmar, etc. Lots of dance clubs allow girls 18 and over in with a small cover charge on select days of the week." Finally, "students often take weekend trips into the city (either New York or Philadelphia) by train or by car" when they want to get off campus.
Students Say - Student Body
There's a lot of conspicuous wealth at Monmouth in the form of "various expensive cars in the parking lots" and "designer clothes and bags." Students are typically "very trendy," "extremely image-conscious," and "beautiful and very materialistic." Students "are very in tune with the latest fashion and technology trends." They tend to come from "New Jersey; Pennsylvania; or Staten Island or Long Island, New York. We are all from the suburbs and probably have the same family income." Monmouth's proximity to the beach attracts "many skaters and surfers" as well as "a lot of relaxed people."
