Best Business Schools (Midwest)
Students Say - AcademicsThe Lubar School of Business at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee provides "a good core MBA program with many extra courses offered" to a student body as varied as the city it serves. Lubar MBA and MS programs can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis. The MBA degree can be completed at the main campus in Milwaukee, or at the campus in Waukesha. The MBA program at the Waukesha campus can be completed in 16 months. All classes meet in the evening, with a few courses scheduled on Saturdays or in a hybrid online format. The Executive MBA program meets on alternating Fridays and Saturdays for four semesters over a 22-month period. Full-time students love the option of an "accelerated MBA program that allow you to complete your degree in 16 months," while part timers value the way the program "accommodates our needs" with a concentrated evening schedule. Everyone appreciates the convenience and affordability of the program. "It's the only decent business school in its price range in southeast Wisconsin," one student explains, alluding to the pricier cross-town program at Marquette. The Lubar MBA offers a number of "career focus concentrations," allowing students the option to develop a specialization in healthcare management, international business, managing change, or supply chain management. Students may also pursue an elective track in cost management and ERP, e-business, entrepreneurship, financial strategy, global strategy, HR management, IT management, innovation management, investment management, leadership, manufacturing and service operations, marketing, or nonprofit business. "Most professors are great" at UWM, although "a few need to be weeded out," particularly those "who have little teaching experience." Students who can visit campus during the daytime praise "the availability of resources." One writes, "I've never had an issue talking with an adviser, career services staff, or a professor. It helps that it's encouraged to use these resources." Some evening students, on the other hand, would like to see more services.
Students Say - Admissions
Applicants to UW-Milwaukee's MBA program must apply to the university's Graduate School, which refers b-school applications to the School of Business Administration for review and recommendation. The Graduate School Admissions Office makes all final admissions decisions. All applicants must submit a completed application form, an official GMAT score, one official copy of transcripts for all undergraduate work, and a personal statement. Students must achieve a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 and have a GMAT score "that indicates a high probability of success in graduate school" to be considered for "admission in good standing." Applicants who fail to meet these minimum requirements may be granted "admission on probation" status. International students must meet all of the above requirements and must also submit an official TOEFL score report (the minimum required score is 550 on the paper test, 213 on the computer test, and 79 on the internet-based test) or an official IELTS score of 6.5.
Students Say - Campus Life
UWM MBAs "are mostly in their upper 20s with a few years of work experience." They are "very focused and motivated, but also focused on personal lives as well. It's an evening program, so our class is focused on âgetting the job done' with class, but we have a good group where we enjoy each others company as well!" The population includes "mixed degree students, which allows for many different industry perspectives." UWM faces the typical challenges of a "commuter school", with "very little networking or social activity, especially for graduate students." That's especially true for the majority who attend part-time in addition to working full-time and, often, attending to family obligations. There is only one graduate networking club, the Graduate Business Association. "Typically, I go to class and get the heck off campus when completed," a typical student reports. MBA classes are held in the evenings for the convenience of the majority. They appreciate it but warn that "there is definitely a lack of support[services] for evening classes." However, the Lubar School does have evening hours two nights per week for graduate students. Students report that "safety is a concern" around campus during the late evening hours and that the school "needs more parking for community students." Students are much more bullish about Milwaukee, a city "with great public transportation." The life of Milwaukee is great to be surrounded by," one student tell us, noting also the presence of "plenty of employers" in the metropolitan region.
