Students Say - Academics
Leon Hess Business School at Monmouth University has long been a boon to area professionals looking to fast-track their careers. Now, thanks to "a lot of initiatives occurring to improve Monmouth's standing as a leading educational institution," the school is beginning to expand its appeal. Among these innovations is the addition of a full-time accelerated MBA program that can be completed in one year. The school has also broadened its concentration offerings to include not only real estate and health care management (as it has in the past) but also accounting and finance. Finally, the school is expanding its selection of course formats, adding hybrid courses with an online component to its roster of traditional classroom courses. Students here appreciate "the small-school atmosphere in getting to know and interact with your classmates," noting in contrast that "Larger universities…are very impersonal, where students are treated as numbers and figures, not as living people." Cost, convenience, and reputation with local employers all figure into students' choice of MU, as does location; as one student explains, "Being close to New York and Philadelphia helps the school develop the students to what the major employers need." MU professors "bring substantial prior work experience" to the classroom and "are very supportive. They have an interest in seeing their students learn." Students warn that the faculty can be hit-or-miss, though; one MBA informs us, "There are some very good professors and a few professors that are so awful they give poor professors a bad name." Mostly, though, students appreciate how this program "recognizes that students have busy lives outside of school, as many work. Every effort is made to use the e-campus electronic classroom meeting-place for supplemental class work like group discussions. This allows students to log in as their time permits to contribute to discussions with classmates; the discussions are moderated by knowledgeable professors. This use of electronic tools allows for group work that allows for care of your own harried life schedules."

Students Say - Admissions
Minimum requirements for conditional admission to the Monmouth MBA program include either a GMAT score of at least 500, or a formula score of at least 1000 under the formula [(undergraduate GPA x 200) + GMAT score] with a minimum GMAT score of 450. Students who hold graduate degrees in other areas (PhD, Ed D, MD, JD, CPA) may be exempted from the above admissions requirements. Conditional admission may be granted to a few who do not meet any of the above requirements at the program director's discretion. International students whose native language is not English must submit official TOEFL score reports in addition to all required documents listed above (minimum score 550 paper, 213 computer, 79 Internet). The school will also consider results in the IELTS (minimum score 5), Cambridge (all grades of A, B, and C are considered passing grades), or MELAB (minimum score 77).

Students Say - Campus Life
For the many part-time MBA students here with major commitments outside of school, participation in extracurriculars is a rarity. As one student aptly puts it, "I am attending night school, so all I ever see is the parking lot and the classroom." Even those who spend more time on campus say that "The school lacks any central graduate business student grouping. Perhaps an orientation each semester and a graduate business school lounge might lend some cohesiveness. Also, I'd like to see some emphasis on job placement for the graduate business school students." Most here, though tell us that they are "not looking for a full college experience again, so what I am getting now is making me happy." Monmouth's student body is "very diverse"; most here "seem to be in their late 20s to early 30s and up." Quite a few told us that they attended MU as undergraduates and that this experience figured heavily in their decisions to return for an MBA. Some of these are "younger recent graduates" who "seem less focused, as if they are entering undergrad all over."

Students Say - Careers
Career services are provided to Monmouth MBAs by the Center for Student Success, which serves the entire university. The office administers aptitude tests and career inventories and provides a contact point between students and alumni and businesses. One-onone counseling services are also available. According to one student, the Assistant Dean for Career Services at the university is energetic and caring, "but I do not get the impression that there is a full-scale service for placement at the graduate level. This is important to me as a ‘career changer,' but my understanding is that I am in the minority." Companies recruiting business grads at MU include AXA Advisors, Empire Technologies, Meridian Health, Northwest Mutual Financial, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and UPS.
