Best Business Schools (Midwest)
Students Say - AcademicsSaginaw Valley State University combines the personal attention and small class sizes you'd expect to get at a private college with the attractive tuition price you can only find at a public school. The result is a "great value" education that prepares students for upper-level business positions in a friendly, teamwork-oriented environment. Saginaw offers both a full-time and part-time MBA. You'll benefit from small classes and "more focus on students in terms of teacher-student relationships." In addition, cooperation is highly encouraged among the student body, as the school "integrates team work and leadership as a requirement in each class." In fact, there is a "group element in 95 percent of all the courses offered. This group element makes interacting with your classmates a necessity and allows you to get an extremely well-rounded view of the world encompassing all issues, not just business." Fortunately, "everybody is extremely friendly and works well with each other," and "the students come from diverse backgrounds and cultures," which makes group projects particularly rewarding. In the mission statement, the Saginaw Valley College of Business and Management pledges to provide a "relevant, interactive, and quality business education" to its students. To that end, students say Saginaw Valley truly delivers. Bringing real-world relevance to the academic setting, "the professors at Saginaw Valley come from various backgrounds throughout the world and incorporate their research into the classroom." Teaching quality varies between "some very good professors and a few that could be replaced." However, the overall academic experience is excellent. A current student confirms, "I've been very happy with each professor that I have had. They all have practical experience in the field in which they are instructing." In addition, Saginaw students really appreciate the unique "ability to work on research with professors," which adds depth and personal relationships to the MBA coursework. No matter what your personal needs or professional goals, "The administration and professors are great at custom-building the program around the student's needs." In fact, all core coursework is taught through a hybrid/online and in-person work, in order to accommodate students' varying schedules. A student says, "The education I have received to this point has been tremendously helpful in my work life and my personal life." When it comes to the inevitable round of paperwork, the "administration is very helpful and accessible. Applying and communication with the school [was] easy and smooth." A student adds, "After graduating from a large university for my undergraduate education, I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived at Saginaw Valley State University. The administrative staff has been approachable and unspeakably accommodating." The good news doesn't stop there. Students also dole out praises for "Saginaw Valley's world-class facilities. The school is widely integrated with high-tech multimedia applications to aid classroom learning." In addition, "the library is very impressive for the school's size."
Students Say - Admissions
Saginaw Valley admits students based on an admissions index number, calculated using each applicant's GPA and GMAT scores. Therefore, a lower GMAT score can potentially be counter-balanced by a higher GPA, and vice versa. GMAT scores, however, must be above 450 to be considered for admission. In addition to official transcripts and test scores, applicants must also submit a statement of purpose, two professional letters of reference, and a current resume.
Students Say - Campus Life
The newest campus in Michigan's fifteen state colleges, Saginaw Valley State is located on more than 750 acres in the tri-city area. The school's large undergraduate and graduate community hosts a large range of clubs and activities, though the majority of MBA candidates say they don't have much time for extracurricular activities. In the part-time program, students are "usually working outside the home and working on their MBA at the same time." The double life doesn't leave much room for socializing, and most students come to campus for class and not much more. However, if you'd like to go out on the town, students point out that, "SVSU is central located in the middle of three vastly different cities each with its own night-life scene." In this vibrant and academic community, "countless cultural, social, economic, and occupational segments are represented" within the business school. The school also attracts a large international population, which adds a distinctive range of opinions and cultures to the campus. A current student attests, "My fellow students could best be described as widely diverse. My undergraduate education at Michigan State University's College of Engineering had a very diverse atmosphere, but this environment is even more culturally varied."
Students Say - Careers
SVSU's Career Planning and Placement Office hosts on-campus interviews, offers resume and cover letter critiques, and organizes a range of career fairs for Saginaw students and graduates. The larger university also hosts a number of career fairs and recruiting events, which have recently drawn employers such as Abraham and Gaffney, PC; Chase; Hantz Group Financial Services; Prudential; and Wells Fargo. In addition to these services, business students would like to see more job placement assistance for MBA graduates, including "more job fairs and developing closer ties to big corporations. These would help students better plan their careers pre-graduation." However, Saginaw students believe strongly in the value of their education, reminding us that "the program is quickly evolving and growing. Employers are starting to recognize the high value that a Saginaw Valley State University education has."
