Rowan University's Rohrer College of Business MBA program, the school tells us, "offers a variety of course scheduling options for both part-time and full-time students." "As working adults, we have been treated like valued customers," one student notes, pointing out that the once- a-week, three-hour classes (mostly week nights, with some classes held on Saturday mornings) best fit her busy work schedule. Because most students attend part-time, a Rowan degree usually takes between three and six years to complete; those enrolled full-time have the option of completing the program in a single year.
The Rowan MBA curriculum commences with 27 hours of required core courses covering fundamental general-management skills. The curriculum also leaves room for nine hours of electives; students may choose to take a variety of courses that match their career needs or may use these courses to specialize in finance, accounting, management marketing, management information systems, or entrepreneurship. MBAs tell us that "every class involves group work, which teaches students to work well with each other and share work. This skill set has helped in the workforce as well."
The program has been growing in recent years, a fact that students acknowledge and appreciate. The school is accredited by the AACSB as well as the ABET (Accredition board fro Engineering and Technology) , placing it among the nation's top programs. Students tell us that "there has been an increase in the quality of the program, and [they] were delighted when the Rowan program was accredited in 2003. Enrollment has increased, and [they] see a great future for Rowan's MBA program." One graduating BA/MBA student told us that "although the program started at a low level, it is now getting tougher and tougher to get into." The increased standards, we're told, have paid dividends in more challenging classes and more illuminating in-class discussions.
Rohrer College of Business MBAs love that "we are able to access the library's databases from our home computers. It's great to be able to look up material 24/7. Also, online and tele-registrations have reduced the hassle of registering to zero." Technology remains in the spotlight in the classroom; "Rowan teaches computer skills that have proven invaluable in the workforce," students tell us. Overall, students feel that Rowan "is a great regional school whose current programs and commitment to expansion of the program will continue to take great strides in drawing students from outside this region."
Students Say - Admissions
Rowan's graduate b-students are required to complete seven foundation courses, or their undergraduate equivalents. Those courses are foundations of accounting, statistics I, principles of finance, principles of marketing, calculus, operations management, and economics. Applicants to the MBA program must submit official transcripts for all undergraduate work (with a minimum GPA of 2.5. overall or 2.8 for final 60 semester hours), GMAT or GRE scores, two letters of recommendation, a personal statement of career objectives, and a resume. International students whose first language is not English must also provide TOEFL (or equivalent) scores.
Students Say - Campus Life
Rowan serves mostly part-time students. That's not to say the opportunities to socialize and network aren't there; as one BA/MBA student explains, "As an undergraduate, I found many activities that were available to students who lived on and off campus. I enjoyed my four years living on campus. Rowan had activities for everyone, including day and evening events, student government, community-service efforts, fraternities, and campus-wide events. As a graduate student, however, I am a working professional, so I do not have any time to participate in the activities available."
Rowan's suburban New Jersey home town of Glassboro is a mere half-hour's drive from Philadelphia; the Jersey shore is less than an hour to the east, and Atlantic City is only 50 miles away. New York; Washington, D.C.; and the Chesapeake are all within easy travel distances. The Rowan campus is in the middle of an ambitious expansion program, with makeovers planned for most facilities and several new buildings going up. Students praise the new athletic center and enjoy watching Rowan's Division III excellent men's and women's basketball teams.
Students Say - Careers
Rowan maintains a Career and Academic Planning Center "to provide developmental advising" to all students in their pursuit of academic and professional goals. The CAPC serves the entire school; there is no office dedicated specifically to MBAs or to business students on the undergraduate and graduate levels. CAPC Services include one-on-one counseling, workshops, online self-assessment and job databases (like Experience), career publications, and employer directories. Services are available to alumni as well as to current students. It should be noted that most current students are full-time workers looking to advance within their current places of work; relatively few students seeking MBAs are actively searching for new jobs.
