Students Say - Academics
Albion College, a small liberal arts school with "a great biology department" and "wonderful programs in the sciences and pre-law," has "an amazing ability to provide the 'small school' intimacy with peers and instructors while delivering world-class education that competes with major universities," according to its students. Albion boasts of "professors that would make many bigger schools drool," and "Since it's strictly an undergraduate institution, Albion's services are all geared toward the students." Indeed, "The entire faculty and staff always make time for students and even acknowledge you by name when you walk past them on campus," and "The professors seem to genuinely envision a greater academic career for all students and strongly encourage further schooling after attaining the four-year degree." Students also enjoy a "number of available opportunities, in class and out of class, for internships and studying abroad, even after the students leave here," thanks to a strong alumni network. As one undergrad explains, "Albion is about connections. Even though it is a small school, everyone knows someone who goes to or has graduated from Albion. Even though it is out of the way, we are very connected to the wider world." A solid selection of study abroad and research opportunities also "puts us on the cutting edge of this shrinking world." The Albion curriculum is flexible enough to "emphasize the freedom of choice for every individual. It allows students to express themselves in various ways and allows students to get hands-on experience of specific areas of work" while completing their studies.
Students Say - Campus Life
"There isn't a lot to do in the city of Albion itself," but students tell us that "There is always something happening on campus" to compensate. Greek life "is a very large part of Albion, and there are always things going on at the frats"; about one-third of all students join Greek organizations. Other options include "concerts, comedians, and other activities put on by Union Board, an event planning committee sponsored with student activity funds." The school works hard to draw big-name entertainment and in recent years has hosted performances by Dane Cook, Pablo Francisco, OAR, and Less Than Jake. While "A lot of people drink and party because they don't know what else to do," students insist that those who choose not to drink have plenty of options. Hometown Albion "is a small one-horse town where there isn't a whole bunch for the residents to do, let alone the student body." The town's one saving grace is the Bohm movie theatre, "where all students get in for free with ID."
Students Say - Student Body
"I think one word can describe the Albion student: involved," one student writes, adding that "Nearly every Albion student is involved with multiple organizations that engage in community outreach, philosophical discussions, diversity awareness, hobby enthusiasts, and nearly every other aspect of a social organization you can think of." Most here "seem to come from either wealthy backgrounds or are from the surrounding town and are from low-income families," with the balance tilted firmly toward the former group. "There is not a dominant religion" on campus, "but Albion College was founded as a Christian school," meaning that "many of the students are Christian." Most "are white, and many "have always lived in Michigan" and "could be described as the attractive, popular, smart kid in school" who "came to Albion to be a big fish in a small pond."
