Why It's a Great Employer

To avoid permanent layoffs during the recession, this Wisconsin-based sand-mining company implemented a rotating layoff program so everyone had a turn. The longest anyone was off was 6 weeks, and people continued to receive generous benefits, like quarterly distribution of 20% of profits and 100% family health care coverage. In the end, BMC was forced to shut down a small division, but it is now helping the 12 laid-off employees develop a business plan to buy and run the unit themselves.
