The University of California Davis admitted more freshmen for fall 2008, but getting into the university is becoming more competitive.

UC Davis admitted 21,256 students as freshmen for the fall, or 52.4 percent of the 40,568 freshman applicants. That's down from the 58.7 percent, or 20,473, admitted last year. In 2006, it was about 68 percent.

California high school students represent about 93 percent of admitted freshmen.

The university expects to enroll about 5,000 new freshmen this fall. Last year, 4,955 new freshmen enrolled.
