Home foreclosures jumped more than 6 percent in Maryland in March.

That's according to a report released Tuesday by Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac Inc., which said nearly 4,300 homes in the state were foreclosed on last month. The 6 percent increase from February to March placed Maryland 10th among all states in foreclosure rate.

One out of every 538 homes in Maryland received a foreclosure filing in March, the report said. That's even with the national average, RealtyTrac said.

The firm said foreclosure activity in Maryland increased 343 percent compared with one year ago.

Nationally, foreclosures were up 57 percent in March compared with the same month one year prior. The report found 234,685 properties in the U.S. had filed for foreclosure last month.

Nevada ranked first on the list with one in every 139 homes in the state receiving a foreclosure notice. California was second and Florida was third for the month of March.
