Former suitor US Airways mum on Delta-Northwest merge

US Airways Group Inc. declined comment Tuesday on the proposed mega-merger between Delta Air Lines Inc. and Northwest Airlines Corp.

Delta (NYSE:DAL) and Northwest (NYSE:NWA) announced a $17.7 billion merger plan Monday.

Tempe-based US Airways (NYSE:LCC) made an $11 billion merger offer to Atlanta-based Delta that was turned down last year.

US Airways spokesman Morgan Durrant declined comment Tuesday on the proposed Northwest/Delta marriage.

Durrant also did not comment on whether US Airways was looking for other merger options, US Airways Chairman Doug Parker routinely has talked up the need for consolidation in the turbulent airline sector.

Northwest is based in Minneapolis.
