Three locally based health care providers can move forward with plans to build megavoltage radiation centers in the Louisville area.

Chief administrative law judge Andrew Smith today approved state certificate of need applications for the centers, said Shane O'Donley, director of the Kentucky Division of Certificate of Need.

An application was approved for one new center each to be operated by Norton Healthcare Inc., Baptist Healthcare System Inc. and the Iasis Group Inc., a physicians group that works with Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's HealthCare Inc.

Norton has plans to build a $9.7 million cancer radiation center on its downtown campus. The 14,400-square-foot facility will serve both Norton Hospital and Kosair Children's Hospital.

Baptist Healthcare plans to establish a $4.7 million radiation center at an outpatient facility that is being built at Eastpoint Business Center.

Iasis will operate a $4.1 million radiation center that will be part of a larger project planned by Jewish Hospital, to be built off Old Henry Road, just east of the Gene Snyder Freeway.

Baptist and Iasis initially had filed applications to build two radiation centers each in the Louisville area. But the organizations determined last month that they would defer one application each after Judge Smith ruled that only three such centers could be built in the area.
