U.S. Steel Corp. (NYSE: X) has filed permits to construct two new facilities in Sumter County, as part of a multimillion investment program in Alabama.

The $150 million first phase of the program, which will involve construction of both a carbon alloy synthesis facility and a cogeneration facility, will create 75 full-time jobs and 250 temporary construction jobs.

The proposed facility, in Port of Epes, will produce 250,000 tons of Cokonyx carbon alloy material per year.

The Cokonyx will be used at the U.S. Steel's Fairfield Works site. Company leaders say the Sumter County project will improve the cost competitiveness of the Fairfield facility.

Once all phases are complete, the company's total investment in the Sumter County project will be approximately $450 million and 235 full-time jobs will be created.
